We got to the restaurant late(around 20h30 or so) and walked in. There were a few people in the dining room and we went directly to the little shoppe on the right as you enter so we could see what interesting items they might have. We found dark chocolate pecan clusters and dark chocolate candied orange and apricot slices that were simply dee-li-ciouss!! That done, we came back to the restaurant and opted for the pub side where staff and patrons greeted us with a cheerful "Hi!" We look around and ask if we can have diner and are told the kitchen is closed since 20h00. We must have had a very disappointed look on our face because Paul said: "Hang on. I'll see if the chef can put something together for you". 2 minutes later he invites us to have a seat at any table. We choose a small table by a window and order water and coffee. Paul then brings us menus and tells us that we can choose anything except 2 items because they are out of a few ingredients as they have only reopened 2 days ago. They use fresh, locally grown organic ingredients as much as possible so of course we understand. There is a bachelorette party on the far side of the pub and they seem to be having a wonderful time. On their way out they all said good night to us even though they did not know us. The atmosphere and ambiance invite friendliness and it is very nice! My bride Joanne opts for the duck with saffron rice and also requests a side of garlic mashed potatoes. The crushed green peppercorns with blueberry coulis matches the cooked to perfection duck slices exquisitely and the saffron rice is good but the garlic potatoes should be patented!! Joanne loved all of it. I chose the honey glazed beef rib appetizer; 2 good sized, very tasty beef ribs accompanied by fresh greens were definitely worth the stop. A few minutes prior our getting served one of the bar patrons get up and dims the lights in the bar. She says it will be more romantic that way!! How nice. The sommelier paired a wonderful Italian Veneto red with the duck as we were not sure what to have with it. Because I was driving another few hours I chose not to have any but I did taste Joanne's and it was excellent. We were offered desert however we chose to have some of the dark chocolate treats purchased earlier. Kaitlin made sure we had plenty of water and kept my coffee cup full of some of the smoothest coffee this side of Blue Mountain. Her smile is beautiful and at no time did we feel we were intruding even though it was after hours. Even more so, we were made to feel welcome and introduced to a few regulars including Maggie, the mascot. By the time we left around 22h00 the owners were finally having their (late) diner but Paul and Kaitlin made sure to get up to bid us goodbye and safe trip. The refreshing renovations make the restaurant even more comfortable than when we last stopped in mid-February 2012. If you drive by without seeing it don't feel bad as it is well hidden but it is on the west side of Highway 7 in Maberly, On. Just stop, turn around and come back. Totally and completely worth the stop!!
