At about 1:30 AM on Friday, 1/18/08, I made a telephone reservation directly with this Inn for Saturday night, 1/19/08. The lady on the phone was extremely friendly and confirmed my reservation for a double, no smoking with microwave and refrigerator for $64.76 including tax and the breakfast buffet. I repeated the price with tax and she confirmed I was correct. I explained I would be paying cash and gave her my credit card to hold the reservation. She assured me that paying cash was not a problem. It was a problem! Everything was a problem!
At about 6 PM, the parking lot and main entrance were dark and dreary. The lobby was cold and not especially clean. I waited at the empty front desk for at least five minutes making noises and trying to get someone's attention to check me in. Raphael finally appeared and found my reservation. He insisted my credit card had to be approved before he would allow me to check in. I did not want the charge held on my credit card. I had been told I could pay in cash but Raphael would not take it! He made it clear that he didn't care if I checked in or not.
When my credit card cleared Raphael informed me the price I was quoted when I made the reservation did not include tax! He did not care that I was told it included tax, and would not honor the price I was quoted. He called his manager who also explained to me over the phone that the price was incorrect; she added that they had just had a staff meeting about this very thing so she was sure I was wrong.
After driving four hours and looking forward to staying in this hotel, I learned I couldn't check in without a credit card, I couldn't pay cash, and I had been guaranteed an incorrect price! They finally agreed to give me the room for just over $71 including tax. After standing there no less than 20 minutes trying to check in, I said no thank you to the arrogant Raphael and his manager. I'm sure they didn't care that I walked out.
I drove a short distance west on Beckley Road to a Days Inn on the same side of the road at the same I94 exit (97). The Days Inn appeared every bit as nice as what I had seen of the Best Western. A friendly clerk quickly checked me in without a reservation and allowed me to prepay for my room in cash. Checking in took no more than 5 minutes. The room was clean, warm, and included a continental breakfast, in-room microwave, refrigerator, safe, high-speed internet, and more TV channels than available at this Best Western - all for a few cents over $40 including tax!
