“Better than average- far from perfect”

Beechwood Hotel

I stayed in this location for a week in October 2005. Overall it’s a nice quiet location with a very friendly staff. The lobby is open with a fireplace . My room was an "executive king" (117); King bed, two small chairs, mini fridge and an average size bath. Continental breakfast is included.

The good: The staff is friendly, bed was comfortable, free high speed internet is a nice touch , there is no mini bar in the room, but an honor basket with snacks is available with very reasonable prices (most less than 4.00) , robes in the room, even an umbrella in the room.

The not so good: my phone didn’t work (no incoming calls) and it took 2 days to have it fixed!, I couldn’t order an in-room movie (again due to some problem with the phone), two or three times during my stay my room key just stopped working, I was on the second floor and the water pressure was very poor. The staff was nice but ill-equiped to address any problems with the facilities. The work-out room is very small ( maybe 5 pieces of equip), the room walls are thin (I was awakened by the alarm next door and could even hear a sneeze), bar is tiny, set up in a hallway with very limited hours.
I didn't eat in the restaurant, but did eat at a local spot, the "Sole Proprietor" - pricey but good.
Overall an above average place for no more than one or 2 nights.

“Not as good as everyone here says”

Beechwood Hotel

I got the impression from reading the reviews here and looking at the hotel's web site that this was some sort of boutique gem. But the rooms are 3-star quality and not at the level of a standard-issue Sheraton or Marriott.

A few lowlights:

We sent them an email asking for rate information, and no one replied. We called on the way there for directions, and the person at the front desk didn't know how to tell us to get there. One of the phones in our room didn't work. The hotel's entire Internet service was down during a portion of our stay. The room was bone dry, yet the hotel didn't have humidifiers to lend out. They seem to be trying hard at their "five-star" (according to the front desk) restaurant, but the menu descriptions revealed odd food/sauce pairings and a culinary sensibility that's many years outdated. No comforter, just the standard 2/3 star blanket-between-two-sheets setup.

And highlights:

They matched the Expedia rate ($119 for a Saturday night), even though they appear not to have a lowest-rate guarantee. Free local and long distance calls and free high-speed Internet (when it's working). Two robes in the closet. A window that opened.

So don't expect the world, though it may well be better than the second best place in town (as ranked by TA). Worcester has been an underachiever for decades now, but the city tries so hard. It deserves a better "best" hotel than this.

“Lovely!”

We stayed at this fine boutique hotel for three nights (Dec. 27-29, 2004). This was our first trip to Worcester and we were unfamilair with the area as well as the hotel itself. We were pleasantly surprised when we checked in (quick and efficient) and went to our Executive Level Suite which was furnished with a king bed, refrigerator, a dry bar, and a sitting area (which was also a pull out sofa bed.) The room was nicely decorated and furnished. We also received free long-distance calls, complimentary high-speed Internet access, print-on-demand service, newspapers, Continental breakfast each morning, and Frette bathrobes. There were extra pillows and blankets in the double closet, too, which I thought was a nice feature considering I almost always call housekeeping to request additional pillows when I stay in a hotel. Although the hotel is not located in downtown Worcester, it is close to everything (incliding downtown): museum, shopping, colleges, movie theaters. We only experienced a slight glitch in our stay: our room keys did not work on three separate occasions! For some reason, they deactivated. As a result, we had to traipse to the Front Desk to have the keys reset. But, truly, that was a small annoyance especially considering that everything else was wonderful We hope to have an opportunity to visit here again..

The Beechwood Hotel was a great luxury hotel experience. I stayed there in July 2003. The room was beautiful, the staff very helpful and the hotel services include a fast internet connection in your room, a fitness room and a restaurant with an extensive wine list. I rate this hotel as luxury and it compares favorably with the best hotels in the world and the price makes it a best buy. I recommend this hotel highly.
