My wife and I and another couple went to Chioda's Tratroria last evening. Each couple had a Groupon coupon. Although the coupon says "limit 1 per table," we asked if we could sit together or at two adjacent tables. The hostess was less than pleased with the request. I know, we were asking for an exception, and if they could accommodate us, fine. If not, fine too. She did reluctantly sit us together, telling the waitress to use separate checks. (I do not know why there is a limit of 1 per table. We always go out with another couple. Other restaurants have gladly seated us together using a Gcoupon with that same restriction.)
We started with two Martinis ($5 each) and an order of Fried Calamari, $10. I asked that the spinach, cherry peppers and garlic sauteed in lemon juice and white that comes with the calamari be omitted. We just wanted the fried calamari with the marinara sauce. This was probably the best calamari we have ever had, all four of us agreeing on that. You have never had anything so tender and tasteful. I have the Veal Parmigiano, $17, and my wife had a nightly special, Baked Stuffed Haddock, $16. A very nice salad served with a delicious house dressing was included with the meal. The bread was delicious, despite it being squished down to about 1/2 inch, cutting it while it was still hot. However, they should get a sharper knife or let it cool a little before cutting it. The veal was "okay." My wife's describes here dinner at "excellent," saying the fish was delicious, cooked perfectly, and the green beans were the best she's ever had. Melinda, our waitress, was outstanding!
Does this restaurant deserve a good rating from us? Absolutely. Would we go back? After the hassle, I'm in no hurry. It's too bad they had that restriction. It could have been a very nice evening all around, but it was tainted by the hostess. You'd think they would welcome business. They are off the "beaten path." And for a Saturday evening at 8 PM, this place was less than half full. They should re-think how they do things. Emphasis on bring people in rather than driving them away would be a better way of doing business.
