Stayed here for 5-nights solo-business trip recently. Pleasantly surprised by the quality of the room.
THE GOOD: For $63.74 per night (December AAA rate), I didn't expect a lot. The room was well unexpectedly well appointed (Red Roof Inn seems to be upping their game to compete with Holiday Inn Express or La Quinta): Flat screen TV, coffee maker & coffee, small fridge and even a microwave. The bed was very comfortable and I enjoyed a good night sleep. Free WiFi. Bathrooms were small and the towels were... not fluffy and luxurious, but hey, for $63/night, they got me dry...
THE BAD: Internet speeds were unacceptably slow. Even after system-wide reboot. This needs to be addressed by the hotel management for this to be a viable, repeat stay business hotel. Bathroom had no conditioner (Sorry, Red Roof Inn: Pantene shampoo & conditioner all-in-one doesn't count).
DRIVING TIMES: Located at the intersection of Route 95 and Route 93, just 25 minutes to downtown Boston, 25 minutes to Lowell/Chelmsford and 25 minutes to Waltham. Super convenient location.
THE HANDY: LOTS of stores and restaurants nearby: Oddly, there are three really good Mexican food choices nearby:
* On The Border Cafe (literally next door across parking lot)
* Q'doba Mexican Grill (within walking distance),
* Chipotle (a short drive away).
OTHER FOOD & CONVENIENCES:
* McDonalds (across the street in a mall)
* Market Basket supermarket (across the street in a mall)
* Unos Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza (across the street in a mall),
* Joe's American Bar & Grill and a 99 Restaurant (within walking distance for a late night glass of wine).
* CVS pharmacy (across the street in that same mall -- NOTE: NOT 24-hour)
* a few nearby banks for ATM withdrawals (walking distance).
* Target store (a short drive away)
There are laundry machines and dryers on every floor (handy for a longer stay), but that means you need to make sure you choose a room that's down the hall from the machines to avoid the noise (fair warning).
BREAKFAST: "Continental" Breakfast was minimal with bagels, bags of Quaker State Oatmeal, Coffee and store bought shrink wrapped muffins and hot coffee.
Choose a room an even numbered room (to face away from busy, noisy street) in the high 20's for quiet (220, 320, 420, 520). Hotel manager had a room on the fifth floor, even numbered and in the low 30s if that gives you any idea. Pool is on the first floor but I didn't visit it.
SUMMARY: Internet worked, but modem-speeds were annoying (I edit and upload YouTube videos for marketing purposes - not possible with their connection). Beyond that one hiccup, this hotel was a remarkable value for the area, and a much more refined and well appointed room than I expected of this brand. I dinged them for not having a bottle of conditioner in the room - that always annoys me. There is a Hampton Inn within walking distance that's probably $20 to $30 more expensive per night (time of year dependent), but gets nearly everything right. It's a coin toss between these two hotels. If you care to save $20 bucks a night, the Red Roof Inn is a quality property. If you want just a few more frills and elegant touches in the room, consider the Hampton Inn. The two hotels are within walking distance of one another and very competitive. For me, it's a coin toss, assuming the Red Roof Inn gets their Internet connection sorted out and sped up. Front desk staff were excellent and worked really hard to provide good customer service. Well done. I may repeat.

Thanks for staying with us and we greatly appreciate this extremely thorough review as it will definitely help guests who need to learn more about us get the inside scoop from real travelers. Thanks for recognizing the great value we offer here, we are typically $20 less if not much more than our competition but we still offer a nice, clean, well maintained room with similar amenities, however our rooms are much larger! We also greatly appreciate the positive notes on service and the room as well!
Let's talk about the bad, the Wi-Fi and let me start off by apologizing for the connection problems you encountered. We at Red Roof genuinely value constructive feedback such as this and take it very seriously. Unfortunately, I have to agree with you... the connection is poor so due to that we are in process of a major system upgrade which will not only increase the speed of the internet, but the bandwidth as well so all users are able to receive fast Wi-Fi at the same time, after all we do want you to feel at home! As far as the 2-In-1 Conditioning Shampoo, we do appreciate the feedback and our glad to be able to offer a familiar and trusted brand like Pantene in our rooms and this likely will remain the product of choice, however we may be able to keep some conditioner on hand for requests at the Front Desk.
I am glad the location was good for you and we are fortunate to be surrounded by restaurants, across the street from a mall, supermarket, barbershop, banks and more as well as walking distance to a train that will take you right to downtown Boston or a bus right to Logan Airport!
Also, I wanted to make you aware that we are so close to the start of a full renovation, so though I am thrilled to read you enjoyed the cleanliness and convenience of your room... we are soon to see a major upgrade! Rooms will have hardwood style floors with area style carpets around the beds, flat screen TVs will be wall hung, spa inspired vessel sinks and bathrooms, new Rest Suite beds and bedding, and so much more.
With that said, I hope that if you return to the area and stop in to see the upgrades that we are implementing and we look forward to your next visit.
