“Never even served...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2010

After being rated the number one restaurant in the area, we were looking forward to a great meal. The menu offered a great selection from seafood to a hamburger to just a simple salad bar. We ordered, received our drinks, and then waited. As we waited we noticed that everyone who had come in after us had already been served. We questioned our waitress and she assured us that our meal was coming right up. After another 20 minutes and an empty kitchen we asked the hostess to just cancel our order, but she said it was too late, as they were already plating our meals. Soon the manager came over to our table and told us our order had never actually been placed. Although they did not charge us for our drinks, they did not handle the situation very well, not even telling us where we could get a speedier meal. So after an 80 minute wait, we left and enjoyed ice cream at Lickety Split in the downtown.

“Great food, excellent service and very reasonable prices.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2010

Nice room, open kitchen, very efficient service. My son had the "prime" prime rib and it was huge, nicely seasoned and served medium rare. The carrots, as previously mentioned, were absolutely delicious as were the garlic mashed potatoes. The bread was clearly freshly baked and served warm. I had the tuna which was perfectly prepared: seared on the outside and cool on the inside. We had the famous "mudpie" for dessert and we were able to understand why it is so popular. What's not to like about coffee ice cream, whipped cream, chopped up oreo cookies and some other ingredients all frozen together?

Our service could not have been better although we did arrive for an early dinner before the rush. If you are visiting Williams, this is a great choice and is about 60 seconds off the campus.

“Good food worth a ride”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2010

If you are looking for a family friendy resturant serving a good choice of excellent food that starts with a well stocked salad bar this is for you. My wife and I have visited this resturant once a week for two years and we always feel satisfied as we leave.

“A GEM!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2010

We enjoyed our dinner on Thursday so much that we went back on Friday. Extensive menu from steaks to a delectable seafood pasta and blackened chicken. The garlic mashed potatoes were fluffy and delicately flavored, and the carrots were the best cooked carrots I have had. Many items offered in half portions. Salad bar. Very good wine list. Something for everyone. Charming old building but (only negative) seat near salad bar is effected by fluorescent light. We shared the pecan pie the first night and the mud pie the second. I am drooling as I write this. Chef owner.
We will go back every time we are in Williamstown!

“A A mediocre restaurant whose prices masquerade as fine dining”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2010

In preparation for a weekend in Williamstown to attend Bay State Games we made a reservation for 10 people at Hobson's Choice based on comments posted on this board.

Service: Arriving for a fairly early reservation (6:30) we were seated immediately and greeted perfunctorily by our humorless server. She took a drink order and delivered them promptly, then proceeded to tell us which entress the restaurant was out of. For the rest of the meal we flagged her down for drink refills, questions, etc. She never cracked a smile the entire night.

Food: Other than two orders of clam chowder for the kids the meal was a bitter flop. Both prime rib orders were really fatty. The prime rib ordered medium had been tossed onto the grill to bring it up to desired doneness, leaving it pretty devoid of juices.. The lobster pasta (a rare calorie treat for me, in a "garlic cream sauce") was inedible. Pasta shells and a generous portion of lobster was drowned in plastic-tasting sauce, insulting the lobster in it. At $25 it was all but inedible . I shared with another dinner companion; neither of us could take more than a few bites. Chicken entrees were TINY and not worthy of this restaurant's price point. You could do better at home with a skillet and some pantry staples.

The otherwise respectable salad bar was missing more tha one offering, and the tomatoes were badly wrinkled. We skipped dessert.

In the most egregious act of the night, a full 20 percent gratuity was tacked on to our bill. No mention of such practice is evident on their online menu, which I used to choose from several area restaurants. They also charge a $6 fee for split plates. Our server made a killing last Saturday night by putting little effort in. Lucky her.

Never again.

In my opinion, this review borders on libel.

The sauce for the lobster pasta is made with homemade seafood stock, cajun style roux, and heavy cream. These ingredients are fresh and never impart a taste of plastic.

The prime rib is actually PRIME rib, not choice or select, which are lower grades. The top grades of meat are marbled, not fatty.

These entrees are two of our most popular and raved-about selections.

This customer attended Hobson's on the night of the Bay State Games, which is a family event and brings in large numbers including children.

Our prices are commensurate with the quality of our ingredients and preparation.
