Booked this hotel via Expedia on the day of arrival for one night. Paid just over $50 for two people. The place was fairly easy to find, Main Street lived up to its name on this occasion!
We had a bit of a problem in that the Expedia reservation didn't come through when we got there (about 3 hours after booking) and the gentleman checking in with us had the same problem. Turned out this is because they don't regularly check their emails. After a 15 minute wait, the ladies at the checkout found it and checked us in. Reception staff was perfectly friendly, if slightly slow at getting things done. But this is Cape Cod, and it was summer, so a leisurely pace is to be expected!
We were checked into a room, the number of which escapes me, but it was like travelling back in time. One minute you're in 2011, the next you're in a 1980's cop action movie. The room could easily double as a set for just such a screen play, so if you're a budding film maker, then this is the cheapest set you'll find to shoot your Oscar award winner.
Upon entering the room with a real key (not the swipey Domino's pizza advert card you get nowadays), we were slightly overwhelmed by a smell that made me feel nostalgic about a damp basement in my high school. Fortunately the AC did a decent job of clearing this after a couple of hours.
If dim lighting is considered "romantic", then the illumination in this room was downright sexy as unless you're a barn owl, reading would be a tricky activity.
Evidence of flooding/water leaks to complement the smell continued to paint a grim picture. The carpet, furniture and bathroom looked like they clearly saw a half dozen presidents take to the White House during their time, but that's pretty much where the bad news ends.
Yes the AC and fridge sounded like a robot with indigestion, and the bed springs provided a free shiatsu and acupuncture whenever you roll to the side, but the room was well taken care of - bed sheets were clean and fresh, and the bathroom was extremely clean, despite having a few spots of mould. The TV worked (just don't expect an HD cinema), water pressure and temperature were as good as anywhere else, and we had an excellent night's sleep in this place.
I'll also say that this room was huge. So much so that you could probably pitch a tent in it if you don't trust the bed sheet. If you want to go camping and your other half doesn't, compromise and camp in this motel room!
The swimming pool areas looked tidy, although we didn't use the pools, and in general the hotel, whilst outdated, seems to be well taken care of. No breakfast but plenty of places within a short distance. Vending machines also available.
One thing I would say, our room was round the back of the hotel - which at night is a mildly dodgy area since it's very poorly lit and there is a wooded area right next to it. If you're staying with kids, I think you (and they) would be more comfortable on the illuminated parking lot side.
I give the motel 3 stars, but within this price range, it's easily a 4. For $50 it's a good place to stay in a very convenient and good location. Next time I'd probably look for a slightly better more expensive place, but if I had only $50 to spend, I'd come back.
Ask for a room on the parking lot side (not round the back)
