“Misleading!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2012

We stayed here 17 years ago and it was the perfect b&b. Excellant hosts, and delicious hot breakfast, so we knew we would go back. We have been to the Vinyard on and off the past 17 years. Upon check things were completely different. They didnt take Discover even though the sign said they did and we had to wait for our room to be ready. The pool was green and closed due to Hurricane Irene..mind you it was August 28th 2011. The guy at check in said it would be open next week. He had been telling people that for a year. Looking back in the feedback the pool was the same before the hurricane in early August, so they never invested any money to clean it or repair it. Our sheets had not been changed from the previous guest as there was sand in the base of them, but since we got back to our room so late, we couldnt get help since no one was in the office. "Breakfast" was stale cold corn muffins. Upon returning on the 2nd day our room was NOT made up. We immediatley called and the attendant came to our room, saying they only clean up if you are here more than 2 days. WHAT??? He insisted it was on the website, which it wasnt. He said the owner was there but He NEVER came up to our room. The downstairs door has no glass in it so bugs, moths and mosquitos were everywhere!! They even got into our room, which was the Oak Bluff room. We spoke with 3 other couples who we did not know before, and they said the same thing, it was such a bad experience for all of us, one couple even left early. I found out this b&b has changed hands 3 times. Clearly the new owners just took it and did nothing with it!! It may be cheaper but you are better off staying in the Mv Hostel a few block over for $35.00 a night. The poorest customer service and the owners were no where around! Fireworks for the 4th in Edgartown were the best..so next time stay in Edgartown.

Room Tip: Stay at the Harbor View in Edgartown.

The pools broken. Apparently It's been broken since last august when the hurricane hit. Would have been nice to know that they were to cheap to fix it. You can't control the ac because its a "house" according to the kid. That's fine, at least provide us with a fan if the people next door are sleeping. The place is run down and poor staff who don't know customer service if it bit them in the but. DON'T STAY HERE !

The tv was broken, a tile in the sink area was broken and they put a throw rugg over it to hide the broke tile. One towel had stains on it.They called breakfast three muffins that are left on a table with cereal in a plastic container. Over all it is over priced for what you get. The people however are very nice and friendly.

I am nit sure why they have received a couple of bad reviews. I am a hotel person, and I had no problem with staying here. The owner Danny could not have been nicer. We stayed in Oak Bluffs room. Nice towels, very clean, sheets and bed were average. But maybe I am spoiled from Hiltons !! I do have to agree with other reviews, Danny's Brother needs to learn how to be friendly, when I checked out, he could have tried a "how was everything"? He just looked up and after I said thank you he said something. I hope in time, the niceness of Danny rubs off on him. But it is close to Vineyard Haven and has a new pool.

Had the same problem several times while in Martha's: Attitude. At the restaurant, at the bus, even at the library (they refused to give us a glass of water!). Hight Haven House wasn't an exception, and we are happy they did us a favor and impulse us to move. We stood two days of beds not made and bedrooms not cleaned (it seams they don't get into the guest rooms unless checked for 3 or more days) and a morning without caffeine (even when I explained them emphatically how important is caffeine for my marriage), but we finally packed and moved to Oaks Buffs when they preferred to see us going before compromise on any way. We where the only guest at the B&B, on the cheapest room, with two twin, but somebody was checking there on our 3rd night, so we needed to move a more expensive room, with a queen bed. We asked if they will rent it for the same price, the answer was 'no'. Still, we may had pay the 10 extra dollars just to avoid the hassle of moving, but we where worried the new guests will use the shared bathroom for an hour and we couldn't access a toilet if needed. We asked if there was another toilet we could use on such occasion and again the answer was 'no', even when we could see right there, at the corner of the office, behind them, a toilet. Not to mention the 5 or 6 more they have around the house, on empty rooms...did I mention the place was empty? So we got our bikes, our luggage and biked to Oak Buffs, (what we consider a nicer town) to a place that cost the same ($69, October, 2010) also w/ shared bath, (but since they have 5 around the property will be very odd to have all taken), with much less attitude and nicer rooms. And not only we where happy to have done it it, we wished we had know more and stay there from the beginning.
For the amenities they say having: We never saw something remotely similar to a health club, nor where we offer going to one. Our room didn't had a VCR's as they publish (anyway, what was that? Can't remember!), microwave or refrigerator. In October the pool was closed and we never saw a hot tub (may have been to cold for the pool, but a hot tub is always nice) and the fireplace where never lighted (may have been to early in the season for that..or...let me repeat it one more time: the place was empty, to the extent that the common areas where a little cold and you could see that by the fact the owners at the desk wearing jackets, so why to bother lighting the fire for only a couple?) and while the Hight Haven has been nicely remodeled and has big flats screen TVs around, we preferred a place with smilers TV's but a much bigger sense of hospitality. If you shop around or read my other opinions, you will find it too.

Thank you for your opinion and input. You described the whole Island as having a bad attitude, but what you were probably experiencing was the push back from vendors and the companies because you were constantly trying to get things for free or lower rates and in a very un-polite and pushy way. Before we had even rented you a room, you were upset and peeved about the prices on the Island and your experience at the Inn before ours.

We recall this situation well and remember it quite differently. We had a room that was $69.00 a night in the off-season, as well as a room that was $79.00 a night. You arrived in person one evening and asked for the $69.00 room, which included 2 twin beds with a shared bath. You didn't like that option so we offered you the next cheapest room, which had a double bed and a shared bath, but you didn't want to spend the extra $10.00 dollars. You argued with one of our staff members for some time over getting an even nicer room at the cheaper rate, which is something we may had done if you had not demanded it and been so pushy with the front desk worker.

The place was not empty of other guests as you claimed, and there were guests who had already booked the room you ended up taking which was why you were going to have to move if you wanted to stay more than 2 nights. It wouldn’t make any sense for us to send guests away if we have the space. Also, I have never heard of place of lodging letting someone use the bathrooms in other guest rooms.

Yes the pool was closed in October...I'm not even sure why we have to explain that. If we left the pool open during that time we could very well be liable for people catching hypothermia.

The photos of the hot tub you spoke of were from non-updated websites on the internet from the previous owner. We had an electrician look at it, and not only was it not wired legally, it was a major safety concern so we had it removed. We have never claimed to have a hot tub since we owned the establishment, nor have we advertised having VCR's (does anyone have VCR's anymore?) in the room or a health center. We explained in person what we had for amenities prior to you renting a room, as you demanded to see many of the different rooms so there was no confusion at the time you paid.

As far as coffee, yes we have coffee available in the morning and during the day, but we do claim to provide unlimited free coffee 24 hours a day. We provide complimentary coffee to guests, and to that point had not had to think about a limit. Between the time you checked in around 4-5 PM, and sometime around 6-7PM you and your significant other drank the same amount of coffee that normally 4-5 couples drink combined. Later that night you also ate muffins we had put out at night before for other guests leaving early. You complained to the front desk all the coffee was already gone later in the evening when the stores had already closed. The next morning, we were unable to buy more Keurig pods until the stores had opened. If you were from off Island, you may not be familiar with the limitations on store hours or that we don’t have 24 hours Walmarts or anything of the sort. Your stay was actually the reason why we started limiting the amount of coffee we left our for guests in the evening, to ensure there was enough for everyone during the morning and why we leave breakfast muffins in labeled bags for guest who are checking out early.

We made it clear when you checked in we did not remake beds unless the guest was staying for longer than 2 nights, which you did not. Originally, you came in and requested one night, it was the next night (you were not around during check out time to let us know if you were staying an additional night) that you decided to stay longer which would have led us to believe you were satisfied with the lodging.

We have both central air and heating but we try to keep the house at a neutral temperature as guests prefer I wide range of temperatures.

Finally, we didn’t bother charging a fee for extra clean-up in the room, despite the state of your room upon leaving because we knew that would only stir up more problems, but that is our fault for trying to make the best of a bad situation. We can respect travelers trying to vacation on a budget as we have the lowest rates on the Island but that is very different than going on a vacation and trying to haggle non negotiable prices down and being obtuse when you have to pay the advertised rate. Priceline.com would have allowed you to negotiate prices prior to going on vacation and perhaps you would not have needed to move between 3 different Inns.

Let me start by saying, while my stay rates "poor" this place does have potential. Danny - one of two brothers that own the place - seems to care. They other brother, not so much. And it shows.

We arrived and Chris, the other brother, was handling check-in. He honestly did not even bother to greet us. He wordlessly walked us to our door and handed me a key. He started to walk away before I stopped him to ask for some basic info, like when and where breakfast would be. He gave us the most minimal reply before walking off.

This is a budget place. This also shows. Do not expect the typical things you may have experienced with other B&B's. Even then, I was really disappointed and didn't feel it was worth the price we paid - even if it is a bargain for the island.

Our rooms were clean and the beds were fine, but the bathroom is in need of update/repair and smelled of mildew. We had the suite with a kitchen, which had dishes in the sink and items left in the fridge from the last guests. Not sure what other rooms might be like, but ours lacked any sort of charm or warmth. Except for one photo in the common area, there were no pictures on the walls.

The location is not necessarily near town, but could be considered walking distance if 10-15 minutes is walking distance to you. The property is located in a residential area that was quiet and safe.

We finally met Danny the second day. He apologized for the check-in and the mildew, but this didn't really change how poorly things went.

I regret having chosen High Haven. I wish I'd spent just a few more dollars to stay elsewhere. I think the family member traveling with me said it best when she said "I don't think these people have ever stayed at a B&B. They don't seem to know what they're doing." Even then, I do wish Danny luck with this and hope it can improve if they accept the feedback they hear from guests.

I must say we were a bit concerned about the negative reviews of this establishment, but they certainly were mistaken. Danny (the owner) was in contact with me the day before we arrived until we left. The room was just as we expected, nice and clean, without significant luxuries. There was, however, the requisite free wifi and flat screen TV. The location is a bit far from town, but a pleasant 10 minute walk nonetheless. My only gripe was that the AC was on throughout the night without any in-room controls. Overall, we feel that this hotel is worth it's value and would recommend it to anyone traveling on a budget
