My husband and I stayed this past weekend for 1 night at the Inn. We've been to quite a few in the Berkshires the past 10 years. Overall, we rated this property as a good stay. The Barn Suite was very nice and comfortable, and the massages we received were great ! We had ordered a wine & cheese platter that was waiting for us in the room when we arrived. Very tasty.
I must say that I rather liked the privacy we had being in the Barn suites. Didn't feel like we had to be quiet or concerned about other guests since we were not in the main house. It was wonderful to have our own deck and be secluded from the rest of the property!
We had dinner at Chez Nous in Lee. It was recommended. All we could say was the food was average at best, nothing outstanding, overpriced, and the service was wicked slow. We had reservations, and I had requested a quiet secluded table for 2 more than a week earlier. When we arrived, we were seated in the "main" dining room, not very private. We waited 20 min for the waitress to even come and take our drink orders. The owner's wife was actually going around apologizing for how slow the service was. We opted not to stay for dessert, as the waitress left the dessert menus and disappeared for another 20 mins. We paid the bill and left for about $100.00 - not worth it. Should have gone to Pearl's for steak.
We didn't see the inn keepers much. We never saw Alice. We saw Len in the morning at breakfast. We ate in the little side dining room, not the main dining room, he was in his chef's outfit and I recognized his picture, but he was only chatting with the guests in the main dining room. He didn't come in and introduce himself or say "hi"to us - which I thought was unusual, as the innkeepers we've had in the past usually introduce and talk to all of their guests at breakfast time. Didn't really matter, it was no big deal- just odd based on other reviews on this board.
Breakfast was okay - not as great as the other reviews I've read on this board. It was served from 9am-10am. We got there at 910am. Only about 4 other people were in the dining room at the time. The bread basket was empty except for some slices of wheat bread and 1 english muffin. There was a side dish of bacon that was horribly burnt, not crispy- black & burnt. The "wait staff" (coffee pourers) added new bacon that was cooked correctly, but didn't discard the burnt bacon. The hot entree was some type of egg and vegetable casserole. There were no scones, and no muffins - only 1/2 a loaf of some date bread. My husband was not happy with breakfast since he isn't big on vegetables or casseroles. Looking at the website you get the idea that there are eggs (cooked your way), bacon or sausage, french toast etc from the pictures at least. Which is what he had expected. It was serve yourself - which we did like, as you could take as much as you wanted. I did enjoy the casserole - but I love omelettes, and it wasn't much different in taste.
Would we go back - probably yes - simply for the room and the massage services. The food and service was okay - not outstanding, but we went for the privacy anyway. I did enjoy my time there, but after hyping myself up for 2 weeks by looking at the wonderful website they have - I just expected a little more. It appears on the website like the ulitmate getaway for the rich & famous, but it really isn't -it's more down to earth. But you will pay a good sum of money to stay there, especially in the suites.
I'm not a picky traveler, but I've been a travel agent for the past 14 years and definitely know what I like. And at the price we paid for the room with tax & service (303.96) I think it was a little much. This is a great inn, but the prices (for the off season) are a bit higher than is really warranted.
