“Living history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2010

When staying in the Historic Merrell Inn you stay in a living history. The Inn has been beautifully restored and it feels like you live in the early 1800's. We had a charming room on the second floor wit a good coach te spent the evenings and a good bed to spend the nights.
When we arrived the owner welcomed us very warmly showing us the house and the beautiful gardens. At breakfast there always was time for a chat, which we like very much when staying in a B & B. Breakfast was tasty.
When you visit the Berkshires, Historic Merrell Inn is at a very central location. It is only a two minutes drive to charming Stockbridge, Lee and Lenox and only at a short distance of Hancock Shaker Village.

This inn was once a stagecoach stop and it is still a welcoming place to stay in the Berkshires. George, the innkeeper, graciously rented us a room for just one night, which is not his usual policy on a peak weekend...especially if the night is the opening night for the BSO at Tanglewood. We were exceeding lucky! Our room was charming and large, with plenty of room for a cot for our teenager. Do not expect a bathroom full of luxurious soaps, lotions, etc., if that is important to you...What you can expect is a comfortable, historic room, free parking, a hospitable host, and a delicious breakfast.

The Historic Merrell Inn is located in a perfect spot in the Berkshires. It is close to Tanglewood in Lenox Massachussets, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; be sure that you visit Tanglewood for a rehearsal or a concert, if you are in the area in the summer. Also close by, is the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge. Equally worthwhile is a visit to the Hancock Shaker Village, a restored Shaker community filled with fascinating history and beautiful Shaker furniture. Even though the weather was rainy, we thoroughly enjoyed riding through Berkshire counrtyside.

In short, we found the Historic Merrell Inn to be a great place to stay in the Berkshires and we would return again.

We traveled with our 3 and 7 year old girls for their first "real vacation" outside of a cruise, and found this to be such a fantastic find. We stayed in Room 11 which was a suite with a living room with pull out sofa, and the main bedroom was beautiful. The girls loved being in their own room, while also enjoying our room too. The best part was the private balcony overlooking the expansive lawn which made running around nice, without bothering the other guests. We were accomodated well by the innkeeper for ideas to travel with the girls, and also exactly what they wanted to eat for breakfast. Would absolutely return!

After our favorite B&B in nearby Stockbridge closed due to the retirement from the business of the innkeepers, we went to the Deneen Pottery website to the "Find your Next mug" page and discovered the Historic Merrell Inn. What an incredible find! Of the 34 B&B's we've visited, we would rate this among the top 4 of them all. The innkeepers are gracious, the rooms are comfortable and most attractive. We stayed for two nights in the smallest room, #3, and it was delightful. We have never experienced finer breakfasts in a B&B anywhere and there were 4 choices of entrees with available variations. The French Toast was to die for, and the blueberry pancakes were excellent as well. If you like omlettes, theirs are delicious. As we visit the Berkshires every year, we are delighted to find this inn to which we shall return, The price was very reasonable especially for the Berkshires in the summer. There is a beautiful river suite off the back of the inn which they showed to us and next year we will treat ourselves to that. And if you collect the Cloth and Clay coffee mugs by Deneen Pottery, the Merrell Inn has them! Every aspect of our stay at this inn was perfect. We cannot speak too highly of this place and we look forward to our return.

Our recent stay at the Historic Merrell Inn proved to be enjoyable and relaxing. The innkeepers are friendly, accomadating and are eager to help with any questions you might have about local attractions. Historic is the operative word at the Merrell Inn as each room has been uniquely furnished offering both modern amenities while retaining the original 19th Century decor.

Breakfast (cooked to order) was very good and offered many choices. Suggested dining proved to be outstanding; Great Barrington Brewery was a great dinner stop. If you burn out shopping and the wives want to continue simply slip away to the Locker Room in Lee, a sports bar offering the NFL Ticket and fine food and libations.

One needed improvement for the Guest Rooms: Flat Screen TV's

The owner's son gave us a nice history and tour of the facility and an opportunity to upgrade to their best room(which my wife took them up on since it was her birthday). Our room was homey and very clean . The view of the rear grounds lead to a small river. Breakfast was outstanding and included with the room. Real fresh orange juice! Got some great pictures too! This Inn is located just minutes from the shopping outlets in Lee and close to a wonderful brewery/restaurant where we had a memerable dinner. We suggest this Inn to anyone looking for a short, quality getaway that might live in eastern New York. We'll be back.

There were some prior mixed reviews but we and another couple decided that the price point and general description of Historic Merrell Inn made it worth a try. We were so glad we did because we found our rooms to be charming, spotlessly clean, attractively furnished, even the bed was new and comfortable. Our room was on the 3rd floor (#4 - lovely); our friends were on the second floor (slightly smaller, sink in the room, but attractive and priced right at $15 a night less than ours). Yes, the bathrooms are not large but they are clean as a whistle, the hot water and pressure in the shower were great, and the bonus of complimentary comfy robes for a delicious nap irresistible. Window airconditioners may not be glamorous but they worked really well (and quietly) on a hot July night. Breakfast omelettes were very good (evidently they took notice of a prior suggestion for muffins and provided them - not homemade and not great but a sweet effort). The location, just outside of Stockbridge village, could not be better - Andrew, the innkeeper's bright, energetic, helpful son, gave us a scenic shortcut to Tanglewood that saved time and had us oohing and aahing all the way there. We'll be back!
