We exchanged into this resort thru RCI. Some reviews were not so good so I was concerned how our unit would be. I chose this resort because of the free family activities and the things to do in the Birkshire area but I also wanted to make sure I had a comfortable unit. Because I called ahead of time and because I asked for a better unit when we checked in, we got a better one. We were not in the Presidential units but we were changed from an older unit to one of the newest building they have: building 31. We had unit 807 which was on the 2nd floor. The steps were not hard for me to do (I’m a Senior) but I wouldn’t have wanted the 3rd floor. This building is up the hill and further from the activity center but I’m glad we were there. The view from our balcony was of trees and flowers and not another building. It was definitely quieter than the units closer to the center.
We asked for a cot which was delivered within minutes. We asked for help with the luggage and received it immediately. You can get a towel exchange once during the week and since the towels are not thick, plush ones, I did it. If you are not going to be in the room for the exchange, you leave your dirty towels in a large garbage bag outside the door; they leave clean ones. When you call to arrange this, they also ask if you want any more garbage bags, paper towels, dish soap, and toilet paper. All free.
Our unit was clean. There were some blemishes (gouge in the floor, one stain on the carpet) but nothing that bothered me. I do wish the front burner worked on the stove top but I managed by using the other ones. I tried the oven but it smoked (I think from cleaning residue). I immediately turned it off and no harm done. Not having an oven didn’t ruin my dinner.
The furnishings were fine. Not luxury, not “wow” when you walk in, but fine. The living room was small and the round dining table & 4 chairs were squeezed in very tight. We did fine with 3 adults and 2 kids but one adult always sat on the couch to eat; couldn’t fit at the table. Kitchen had good supplies. Not fancy dishes and glassware, but fine and enough cooking and eating utensils. Dishwasher worked fine.
The master bedroom was huge with a king bed, a jetted tub, separate shower, separate toilet. Wash basin was in the open room; not with the toilet. The cot fit easily in the room. The cot wasn’t comfortable but we used our twin air mattress and it worked fine then. We gave the master to our guests so I didn’t sleep on the king. Our guest said she slept great.
2nd bedroom was a queen with a good, hard mattress. We did not roll to the center. We had a full bath with 2 doors: one to our bedroom and one to the living room. Locking the door to the living room kept our bath private & worked perfectly for us. Enough counter and storage space in the bathrooms, bedrooms, and kitchen.
These units are built very cheaply. There were gaps in the doors to the outside, the sounds carried easily from room to room and from outside to inside, and from upstairs. Luckily, we had good neighbors and we had no problems but… We could hear the people upstairs walking. Again, just walking so no problem. We slept good every night. I would like to have kept the windows open but no screens. Used the AC the whole time. Comfortable but I prefer fresh air. Since the living room was small and narrow, I felt a tad closed-in but it didn’t ruin the week.
Activities: there were many scheduled activities. They had free movies in their theater in both the afternoons and evenings which we didn’t do. We enjoyed the pool, the arcade, the mini-golf, the tennis courts, the bon-fire Wed night with free s’mores and ghost stories. There was a charge for the arcade but our kids had a lot of fun with the $2 card. The arcade was supervised. There were some unruly teens at the bon-fire but I saw no problem in the arcade room. I wouldn’t have left our kids there un-attended tho.
The area: We really enjoyed Magic Wings in S. Deerfield which is about an hour from the resort. Awesome place with thousands of butterflies, tropical flowers and plants. We went on a cloudy day so it wasn’t too humid inside. Very glad we went! Nearby is the Yankee Candle flagship store which is much, much more than a candle shop. There are several decorated rooms with trains and gargoyles and Christmas trees and snow in August. Lots of fun. The kids had their hands made into wax shapes. Loved it. These 2 places near each other made for a full afternoon of fun.
We also enjoyed the small water park at Bousquet ski hill in Pittsfield which is only 20 min from the resort. Admission on Mondays is only $10 per person. Only 3 waterslides and no lazy-river but it’s nice for younger kids. This wouldn’t be for ages 12 & older; it’s too tame. There are picnic tables in the shade for us adults to watch the kids. The mini-golf was fun. The go-karts cost extra and fun.
I had looked ahead of time and got tickets to a play performed by the youth group at Barrington Stage Company. The performance of Lil Mermaid was extremely well done with a great stage set. I would highly recommend any show they put on. It was held in a comfortable theater inside the Birkshire Museum in downtown Pittsfield. Great afternoon performance!
Restaurants: Michaels in Stockbridge good, plentiful, reasonable price. Arizona Pizza (several around) mediocre. Wolfies in Deerfield (after Magic Wings & Yankee Candle) was great. We didn’t eat at the resort.
Summary: so glad we went. Unit was not luxury but fine. The activities and the area was great for a family vacation. I would return here again for a family gathering but not if it was just my hubby and me.
