We chose the inn based on the positive reviews at tripadvisor and the fact that it was one of the few in the area which takes children under 12. For reference, we paid over $300/night - comparable to a good hotel in the Boston area. First, the good. The property looks like the quintessential New England farm. The grounds are beautifully kept. The views are gorgeous. There are plenty of sitting areas around the property. The horses we saw were a little flea-bitten and sad, but added character to the property. The manager is a wonderful middle-aged lady who goes out of her way to make you feel comfortable. (Sadly, she is leaving at the end of October 2012 to enjoy her retirement.)
Now the bad. We were in one of the small cabins just behind the main building. It was advertised as comfortable two-level living. The first floor consisted of an old kitchen straight out of the 70s. Old appliances, crummy floors, cheap and basic furniture and nothing else. The first level was just the kitchen. The upstairs was also back in the 70s. Hideous brown carpet, a small 17" tube TV, a single couch that looked like it came off the Brady Bunch set, a single old bed and a bath the size of a thimble. Hideous cheap green paint everywhere. Scuff and scratch marks all over the place, Having lived in the area for 5 years, I wasn't expecting the Ritz-Carlton out of an old farmhouse, but for $300+/night I was hoping to get something better than a Motel 6. The breakfast was pretty lame. Generic supermarket muffins and croissants, some orange juice and coffee.
To top it all off, we both seem to have picked up the 'flu after the first night there.
Basically, we came away feeling like we'd have been better off checking in at the nearby Best Western and spending the money we saved on tickets to Tanglewood.
