My husband and I recently stayed at the Carriage House with another couple and there were good things and bad things. We mainly chose the Carriage House because of the many positive reviews on Trip Advisor .
At first glance the B&B is quite lovely. As many have reported, the main house is very nice and the inner courtyard with hot tub and sauna are great spaces to hang out or go for a soak. We used the hot tub both days and it was very clean and well kept. At dusk, the whole courtyard is illuminated with sparkling lanterns and candles. Angus and Ken are very nice and helped us book restaurants and also drove us to the ferry, since it was raining the day we left. I really appreciate this kind of personal service when traveling. They really made us feel at home.
We were in rooms 4 and 5, which are ground level and have great back patio areas with loungers and tables and chairs, a very nice touch. The rooms are nicely decorated and have attractive furnishings. However, the rugs in both of our rooms were absolutely disgusting! At first I thought it was just ours, but then our friends showed us their room and the rug was equally stained and dirty.
When I say stained, I'm talking 2- 3 large stains approx 3-4 feet in diameter directly in front of the door to the bathroom and the door to outside. The rugs were generally gray with dirt in this area as well. It just did not seem to fit the rest of the room/inn? Everything else was so nice and clean. Additionally, both of our showers had mold. Ours wasn't as bad, as most of it was contained to around the slider track of the shower door, but the thick black mold was covering the whole track. I was tempted to go buy some bleach and clean it myself. Our friends' shower also had mold in the shower door as well as all up along the wall where the top of the shower stall meets the wall. Honestly, if the rugs had not been so gross, I probably would not have even mentioned the shower mold.
Overall, we had a pleasant stay at the Carriage House. I guess I just thought that for $215 a night in the shoulder season (during last weekend in September) staying at an inn off of the main strip on Commercial St, that this place was going to be superb. I just find it hard to believe that someone could look at the state of the rugs in the rooms and think that this was acceptable? Like I said, it just seemed so out of line with the rest of the vibe and style of the inn.
If the rugs had not been stained and if there wasn't mold in the showers, I would have given the Carriage House an"Excellent" rating. However, as an experienced traveler, I would have to say that these two grievances are unacceptable for $215/night the last weekend in September. There was also no remote control for our TV, but we forgot to mention it as we were barely in the room.
