Following a friend's recommendation, my partner & I booked into the new Waterford Inn for one night as our longer term accommodation at another property started on the next day. I almost don't want to write this review for fear that the word will be out and the place will become TOO popular, and eventually, more expensive.
Let me begin by saying that I am not a big fan of B&Bs and guest houses. I often find them too fussy, overrated, and not too private. Typically, they tend to overbill themselves and fall short on service delivery. In regards to the Waterford Inn, this was not the case.
While the building is in a very old house, it has been totally renovated and updated with air conditioning, flat screen TVs and IPod players. Everything inside is new, refurbished, fresh, clean and up-to-date ... especially the beds/bedding. The "gourmet breakfast” (I am always suspicious of what qualifies as self-billed, “gourmet”) was truly a superb breakfast; the chef makes two types of egg casseroles – one meat based, the other vegetarian, not-to-mention the usual continental breakfast fare. The “wine tasting” at cocktail hour was a nice event consisting of a variety of wines and hors d’oeuvres. In contrast, as a slide note, please refer to my review of the Parker Guest House in San Francisco, which touted similar, trumped up amenities, but delivered them in a cheap (maybe the guest will be too stupid to notice) manner; the Parker House owners should stay at this property and take notes. The hoteliers at Waterford are striving for perfection and cutting no corners … and it shows.
In general, the house was clean, the staff were well-trained & unobtrusive, and the adjoining restaurant was excellent too. Compared to the other property at which we stayed for the majority of days in Ptown, we definitely would have preferred to have remained here – in hindsight. I have already booked future stays with the hotel. Alas, I do expect that the prices will increase once the word is out and demand goes up.
The only complaint that I can register is that we originally booked a king room, which had a plumbing issue and we were downgraded to a smaller, queen room upon check-in. That was a disappointment, however, in a property with limited rooms like this one, it was the best that they could do under the circumstances.
Overall, I’d have to give this place the highest rating and recommendation.
