“great sunsets--and whalewatching too!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

This is the go to spot for locals to check out the sunset. In the winter you can sit even sit cozy in your car and still catch the beautiful views. If you are lucky enough to be there at the right time,--usually early spring--you may even see right whales feeding and cavorting just a few hundred yards offshore.

“Herring Cove Beach - sunsets, whales, swimming, kayaking - MORE!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

Herring Cove Beach is one of the most beautiful places on the East Coast of the United States. Combined with its unmatched beauty, Herring Cove is a "multi-purpose" location. There are several different beach areas: 1) to the far right (as you face the ocean, it's in the direction of the lighthouse) you can walk to Hatches Harbor. Hatches Harbor is formed by is a small river that leads to the ocean and creates a harbor that is larger as the tide comes in and smaller as it goes out. Hathches is usually calm, and is a nice spot for kayaking, families, walking, beachcombing, etc. and it offers slightly warmer water for swimming. The main beach at Herring Cove is accessible by beachfront parking - so you don't have to go far to get into the sand and sea.
To the far left of the beach is a beautiful area backed by sand dunes and frequented by the large gay and lesbian visitors (and their kids and families) to the area - but course, everyone is welcome. During many times of year, you can park your car at the main beach and see whales with the bare eye (right now there are many Right Whales in the area). Herring Cove Beach is also connected to the Cape Cod National Seashore bike trails.
So - for a great beach and overall Cape Cod experience - definitely check out Herring Cove Beach. I've been going there for nearly 40 years - and it only keeps getting better.
PS In the summer, especially on weekends and very hot days - you absolutely need to get there early to get a parking spot - or come in the afternoon. Bring your cooler, kayak, bikes, grill, boogie boards - etc... and a change of clothing because when you're done you have to go into Ptown for some people watching on Commercial Street.

“gorgeous sunsets”

easy to get onto the beach for great sunset shots. The local magazine gives sunset times so you can make your way out there in time.

“Super Beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2013

We were in Provincetown for 4 days in April, and went to Herring Beach every day to let the dogs run. I don't know how it is in season, but in April there was plenty of wide open spaces for the dogs to run. Beautiful, accessible beach.

“Windy on the beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

nice to drive within 12 feet of the ocean with lots of parking. Sad to see the beach erosion over the winter. Dog friendly beach makes it inviting anyday.
