“Delightful stay at a typical French Manoir”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2009

If you want peace and quiet among the vineyards, this is the place for you. We had a well-appointed and extremely clean room overlooking the back garden and the fields beyond. Although it was not ensuite (to create one would have ruined the proportions of the room), our own immaculate shower room was just across the corridor.

Hanne, the German owner, was very friendly and a mine of useful information about the area. And she served the best continental breakfast we have ever eaten. Apart from the usual fresh croissants and French bread with homemade jams, we had ham, eggs, cheeses, fruit and even fish pate. After that you really didn’t need lunch.

The Manoir is value for money in an excellent location just to the north of Beziers and a 20 minute drive to either the coast (a bit touristy) or the hills, which boasted unspoilt French villages. A visit to the village of Rocquebrun with its Mediterranean garden perched high above the River Orb and to the Abbey of Valmagne are both highly recommended.

I have stayed at Manoir les Menestrels twice this year while renovating a house in a nearby village, and found it an absolute delight. Hanne and Horst could not have been more welcoming, and the house itself is, as the earlier reviewer said, like something out of a French film.
Hanne offered dinner every night using delicious products from the region, and the relaxed atmosphere as we sat chatting in the dining room was one of life's lovely moments. This was capped only by eating breakfast of fresh croissant bought from the bakery at Espondeilhan that morning and drinking great coffee while gazing out of the French doors to the garden, the vines beyond and the hills in the distance. It doesn't get much better.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2007

We first stayed at the Manior les Menestrels for two nights last October and could not wait to return. Our hosts, Horst and Hanne, made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived at the elegant gated entrance on a wooded road. Built in 1771, the Manior has had exquisite renovation, and the charm of the B & B was evident as we stepped into the stone courtyard where we saw a chateau adjoining the property. Relaxing with a glass of wine and classical music in the dining room filled with antiques, we had time to chat with our hosts before going to our large and well appointed room overlooking the garden.

The luxurious bed was covered with fine linen and was by far the most comfortable we have enjoyed in many trips to Europe. Lovely white cotton bathrobes were provided as well. The bathroom was large and fitted with quality plumbing throughout.. And the water was as hot as we wanted.

Before retiring for the evening, we visited with our hosts again and had more wine and cheese and regional olives from their own recipe. They offered suggestions on restaurants and local attractions far beyond the average guidebook might provide.

Breakfast was beyond our expectations...coffee, tea, juices, breads, croissants, home made jams, butter, yogurt, eggs, and sliced cold meats or pate. After that, we did not need to eat lunch.

On our return this month, we had the opportunity to stay in the gite (an independent house) across the court yard. Spacious, colorful and warm, it is decorated with taste and attention to the detail that make a traveler feel at home. The gentle sound of a fountain invites you to sit outside and marvel at the architecture and breathe in the pure country air. The lovely sitting room adjoins a fully furnished kitchen and dining area. Nothing has been overlooked...there is a range of herbs and spices, even toothpicks and a candle snuffer. It is a kitchen that would satisfy a gourmet.

A beautiful sculpted staircase curves up to the two spacious bedrooms decorated in the colors of Van Gogh. There is a light filled yellow room and a blue room with a sitting area that overlooks the court yard. A large bathroom with double sinks and a huge shower is located between the bedrooms. Given the chance, we would purchase it for our home.

Upon departing, we felt we were leaving a mis-en-scene of a period French film. We hope to resume our roles as actors in this setting once again...and soon.

*****

Close to the Mediterranean coast. and the motorways, 10km from Beziers and the Canal du Medi, the Manoir is located in the tiny hamlet of Cabrerolles, which means "Home of Frolicking Lambs." Indeed, this is a quiet restive spot that honors the name. In the region there are over 2,500 years of history to explore on sweet drives and walking paths in the area between Montpellier and Carcassonne. Within 45 minutes you are in the mountains, ande 45 minutes from some of the best seafood on the Mediterranean.
