This is the kind of place I love. Small, a little funky, creative--I have a sense the chef loves what he does. But in reality things just didn't fall together well. On the positive side, I loved the drink menu as it is really creative and the drinks were indeed excellent. As were the oysters--freshly shucked and served with a great mango sauce and other accoutrements--really nice start. Then my husband got the grilled clams. These had the potential to be great--but in the end the stuffing was like sprinkled on them and it was cold chorizo sausage and crumbs and it just wasn't good cold. If it was hot perhaps it would have been wonderful. Not sure. We ordered the seafood risotto, and it was below average. The risotto was gluey, I mean really gluey and there simply was not much seafood in it, more shrimp than anything. It was very spicy which kind of overpowered the taste of the seafood. The thing is--the prices here are pretty steep. The place is funky, not nice. So both the food and the people need to really shine. It just didn't happen. There were fruit flies all over the bar and landing on my food. I know this happens, so it didn't kill things for me. But it certainly didn't add. Nor did the bartender. She was polite and made good drinks, but again--for this type of intimate place it felt cold. The cooks were enthusiastic--too bad their enthusiasm can't carry out more throughout the restaurant. Regarding the risotto--for a $25 entree (with no sides or salad) it just didn't make the cut. If this was just bar food, and prices were cheap, then fine.
I think we will try this place again. Maybe it was just an off night. I so appreciate small places, and especially places that try to serve really fresh seafood in a market where seafood is so expensive. Making it in the restaurant business is tough on this type of place and I try to take that into consideration when I write reviews like this. (otherwise it may have only gotten two stars) But I really wanted more. We eat out in this area a lot, and I would love to hang in this place because the decor and the menu are so interesting. But I think I'll wait awhile.
