“Very knowledgeable guide (Will) makes Melville come to life”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2013

The old house is certainly worth a look, especially Melville's study with its great view of Mount Greylock, but Arrowhead's great tour guides really fill in Melville's life and the house's history. There is a very good documentary on whaling to watch while you wait for your tour to begin.

“Edwin Hale Lincoln Exhibit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

This is a small but beautifully curated exhibit (thanks to photographer/curator Alfred DeMaio). Try to go when Mr. DeMaio is giving a talk. The quality of the prints is outstanding. Glass slides are so sharp. It is interesting to see Pittsfield as it was, and Edwin Hale Lincoln was a photographer of distinction. If you are interested an historical perspective on Pittsfield - or better yet - if you are interested in photography, see this little jewel of an exhibit before it closes in October. This exhibit is free if you elect not to do the house tour.

“History and Literature Comes Alive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013

We had the good luck to visit on a day when the head of the museum gave the tour. She was both entertaining and knowledgable. She talked about his life, the time period, the Berkshires, the different books. We were fascinated.

“A Showcase for Melville”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

Our tour guide, Cecilia, made the life of Herman Melville interesting and we learned much we did not know about the author whose major claim to fame, "Moby Dick" became popular long after his death. If it wasn't for a granddaughter who made this possible, this homestead would probably just be another house on Holmes in Pittsfield. There is nothing spectacular about the house and most that was there in the years Melville was the owner is no longer around, but with the guided tour you learn about this author which makes it worth a visit.

There was also an exihibit of sculptures about African American soldiers in the Civil War that was interesting. Coupons for a discount on the admission are available in free tourist magazines which you find readily available at motels and restaurants.

“Fascinating House”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

You tour Arrowhead with a guide. Our guide was extremely well-informed and our tour was wonderful. It is amazing to imagine Herman Melville writing here in the shadow of the Berkshires. There is a small but interesting shop on premises.
