“enjoyed MV Surfside Motel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2008

My husband & I spent 2 nights @MV Surfside Motel and we were extremely pleased. The motel was very clean, grounds were beautiful and staff was very friendly. Loved that the motel was right across the street from Oak Bluffs ferry dock, very convenient. Walking distance to restaurants, stores, etc. We would definitely go for a return visit.

  • Liked — clean room, close to ferry dock
  • Disliked — no coffee pot in room

After an exhaustive search for a dog-friendly hotel on the island, I contacted the Surfside via email, but did not receive a response. Because of the cost of the other hotels, we decided to make a day trip out of it instead. While we were walking around town we stumbled onto the Surfside and asked if they had any rooms available for the night (this was around 4pm.) The guy said he just had a cancellation, and that was the only room available. It was a 2 room suite, normally going for $265/night incl. pet fee. He gave it to us for $210 incl. pet fee.

The room was immaculately clean. The living room portion of the room had a queen size pull out couch, a flat screen tv, a small closet (would have been bigger but it housed the heating/ac unit), and a small kitchen area that included a sink, microwave, and little coffee maker. The fridge had cream for the coffee and 2 bottles of water (no charge.)

The bathroom was also spotless, and it was huge. The tub was an over-sized jacuzzi tub that smelled of bleach, which was nice because we knew it had just been cleaned. The towels were full size and fluffy.

The bedroom had a queen pillow top bed and it's own tv. Both rooms looked out over the main street offering a nice view of the action below.

When we checked in they gave us a doggie welcoming kit that included a milk bone that lasted 7 seconds, a pooper scooper thing, and an informational pamphlet that had area vets and stuff listed in case. The guy working the reception area also told us a place to walk the dog where we wouldn't have to clean up after him, which was nice.

Our dog apparently didn't enjoy being left alone while we ate dinner, and the guy said he could hear him whining and barking a little, but had not received any complaints. If he had, he would have called us as we had left our number with him.

Overall we couldn't have been happier that a room had opened up as it let us extend our stay on the island. My own qualm is that they didn't respond to my original email, which he apologized for, saying that it was probably because they were full.

We had a pleasant stay at the Surfside this past week.
We knew we were not getting a 5 star location, but we were more than happy with what we got. For the price we paid, internet special, $140 a night, we got a nice room, good size for a two night stay, a very clean bathroom, and a location right near everything in Oak Bluffs, and the bus lines, and Ocean Park, so the island was ours. They allowed dogs so we were able to bring our pooch, and being so close to a big park was great. Very happy with what we got.
If Luxury is what you want, this is not your place, but if you can deal with budget accomodations, this does the job very well!

I never made it to this hotel. I sent an email to their reservations email address. Gave it a day and heard nothing. The next day I called them directly, the lady nicely asked if I could call back in an hour due to computer problems. I called back 2 hours later, and was abruptly put on hold, and they never returned. I booked my room elsewhere. Seems they don't really need the customers.

Unfortunately it appears that this gentleman slipped through the cracks. At the time of his call our ENTIRE computer system went on the fritz. We had no access to our reservation system, not even to check dates or availibility. For about 5 days our computer system went on and off line without any rhyme or reason.

During this time we received about 4 dozen calls a day and did our best to take messages and get back to people when our computers decided to work again. If anyone has ever had a major computer meltdown I think they will understand the stress and panic we were experiencing.

After buying new computers, a new reservation software and spending countless hours with tech support we got our system up and running again. We do apologize for the inconvenience this gentlemen experienced, but feel it is unfair to rate us as "terrible" though he has never stayed with us. I can imagine that he was frustrated with the situation but perhaps a little understanding is in order?

We stayed at this motel when we were on island attending a wedding. I think that it was perfect for what we needed. A nice view from the third floor of the busy oceanfront, ferries coming and going. When we first arrived the room did have an odor of strong disinfectant...but we opened the windows and it aired out ok. Not that big, but the bathroom presented a bonus: A view of the Oak Bluffs Harbor.

The bed was comfy and there were a lot of channels on the Cable tv. We checked out about 20 minutes past the 11 am checkout and that was ok. They have parking in the front part of the property.

We booked at Surfside motel for a memorial day weekend. It is a great location since its a couple of houses aways from Oak Bluffs ferry and across the street from a famous flying horses and circus avenue. From my experience, Oak Bluffs is a better place to stay since stores are open later than those in Vineyard Heaven. Surfside is also a block away from a couple of bike rentals and cottage houses. The room we got with double twin bed is just enough size. The room didn't have a hair dryer so we had to ask for one when its needed. The staff are helpful and pretty much gave a better recommendation of restaurants than our cab driver who basically pointed us to tourist places. The only thing that was annoying to us was since we were on 2nd floor, we can hear when people above us, on 3rd floor walk. But it is a very conveinent place to stay for a visit on the island. The price is pretty decent considering the location it is at.
