Friendly and attentive service, creative dishes executed with an attention to detail. A fried calamari appetizer is a good test of a kitchen's touch, and here it's just right -- light, crispy, with a sauce that's not too heavy. The N.Y. strip steak was done perfectly and nicely seasoned without overwhelming the meat's own flavor. Salmon and duck dishes were creatively presented, with carefully-chosen complimentary side dishes. The only thing on anyone's plate that didn't get rave reviews was the wood-grilled tomato caesar salad that accompanies the steak. Desserts are similarly excellent. Portions are satisfying but sensible, emphasizing quality over quantity. That said, I took half of my meal home and ate gourmet-style for lunch the next day.
The atmosphere is comfortable and low-key, if slightly noisy, in the dining room or the bar. Thanks to the knowledgeable staff and generous selection, the bar is a good place to try something new.
The bar plates are also a great value, prepared with the same skill and care as the dinner menu. You would be hard-pressed to find a better burger in that part of MetroWest, and items like fish tacos set this bar menu apart from the usual.
There are lots of restaurants in the area, but a night at Romaine's is an occasional treat we can afford, knowing the experience will be a cut above, and worth the trip out of our way.
