“Expected more from a "boutique" property”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

I was expecting this property to be similar to Inn By The Sea in Cape Elizabeth, Maine or Castle Hill Inn in Newport, RI, but was mistaken. While I can see this being the best option in Northampton, it is simply average. The hotel is in dire need for a renovation, and the staff needs to pay more attention to service. My friend was married in the area in September, and when we called the staff for assistance I was surprised at how little help we received given the size of the room block. Given my experience here, I would most likely save money and stay at the Quality Inn as this hotel was not worth the price.

Have stayed here many times since I frequently need to stay in Northampton and this hotel is really the only option. It is a historic property and nice in areas but in need of many upgrades and could certainly benefit from a little competition in town. The service and staff are barely average and simply seem to have little training or experience. The free breakfast is less than what you would find at an average Hampton Inn and the rooms are small, often have heating or a/c problems, and many need updates. No amenities, pool, spa or real fitness center, and cable TV rarely works. Not great for business travel since there are no real work areas in the room or hotel. Beware of weekends since there are usually wedding parties or other events playing loud music until midnight. All in all a comfortable place to stay during the week if all goes well and if you can find a good deal on the Internet. If you pay full price be prepared to be disappointed in the experience.

Room Tip: Get a higher floor and a room with a sitting area or a junior suite so you have room to move around...

This a unique hotel, steeped in history and refinement. It is old. Let's start there and be pleasantly surprised by the small things that remind us of a gentler time. We loved our stay from the first moment we walked in, to the calm shades of our room, to the genteel service. Relaxation prevailed, we had a wonderful night's rest, and enjoyed the easy proximity to the delights of town, all w/in easy walking distance. I particularly enjoyed the lobby with its comfortable seating, the sight of a brand new bride and groom having their photos taken in the main doorway, and the high quality bath products. One wants a hotel stay to be both pleasant and restful and these requirements were met and exceeded. Modern, Hotel Northampton is not, and thank heaven for that. It is a place to relax from modernity, perhaps. A place to enjoy.

If you are going to spend the night in Northampton this is the place to stay. Stayed here Sunday December 2nd for a concert at the Calvin theater which is right next door. Had a great experience. I was a little concerned based on some of the negative reviews on here, but it turned out there was no need to be. Our room was on the third floor. It was clean, good sized, with a very comfortable queen size bed that included a down comforter. Nice touch. There were no smells as mentioned in some of the other reviews. The Hotel has a wonderful old historic feel, but the rooms are updated and current. I look forward to staying here again.

I've wanted to stay at the Hotel Northampton since first seeing it 25 years ago. I finally stayed with my family after Thanksgiving. It's a delightful, historic hotel. If you're looking for all of the conveniences and amenities of a modern business class or luxury hotel, you might be a little disappointed. But if you're looking to sample what a luxurious hotel of the early 20th century might have been like, Hotel Northampton will give you a taste of this. As such, it offers some quirkiness and a lot of charm. No doubt the rooms differ considerably. We were on the second floor on the side near the library and had a great view of downtown (room 273). We seemed to be out of the way of most hotel traffic, including a noisy wedding that was in progress downstairs. Note that the hotel does a brisk wedding business on the weekends.
We ate dinner at the Higgins Tavern, just under our room. A fantastic and authentic space created from an 18th century tavern from New Hampshire. Incredible and authentic atmosphere. Wonderful service and very decent food. We took advantage of the Continental breakfast, included in the room price. Much higher quality food than we're used to at the Hampton Inn.
My only real complaint about the hotel is that it seems a bit pricey ($200). Then again, it was only $30 more than the Hampton Inn Hotel were usually stay at in Chicopee.

Room Tip: If there's a wedding, ask for a room far from where wedding guests are staying or from the ballr...

This was a really nice place to stay. We had a lovely room with four windows and a queen bed, plenty of room. They provided a Graco porta-crib for our 8-month old and everything in the room was clean and comfortable. The building is beautiful and historic -- a little slanty in some places, as anyone with an old house would be used to -- and right in town. No complaints, except it was a busy fall weekend so it wasn't cheap!
