It took me a couple of months after relocating to Northampton to find out about this place. The tiniest sign at the entryway lets you know you've arrived at your destination, which otherwise apears as a private home nestled among the other stately homes which line Elm Street.
'The Saltbox' is just that- a colonial-style Inn, with ample parking in the rear (a plus in Northampton!). It is perfectly located on the edge of the Smith College Campus, and a moderate walk to the center of downtown. You can pick up a good cup of coffee in the Smith Campus Center, a close walk from Saltbox, before heading downtown for excellent shopping and people watching.
Carol, the innkeeper is extremely welcoming, and helped me with my arrangements for my in-laws. Their Timothy's Orchard suite was charming, with a wood burning fireplace, full kitchen and seperate bedroom with a large bathroom. The suite was self-catering, meaning Carol shopped especially for them, picking up the Greek yogurt they preferred, and black tea rather than herbal to suit my in-law's tastes. There is no group breakfast room or shared meals, rather, she stocks your fridge to suit your needs, then leaves you alone (in a GOOD way). She is a local, full of restaurant suggestions and ideas for your visit.
We own a house in Northampton now, and have a bedroom for visiting family. My father-in-law laments that he won't be able to stay at the Saltbox anymore!
