Have just spent a week here with my sister, we had great fun, enjoyed our holiday but we did expect a bit more paradise from this island. I have been fortunate enough to have been to the Maldives before in a 3* resort and I'm afraid Meeru did not come up to expectations. In my opinion this resort is too big and lacking in that special something you get from a smaller island. They have ruined the environment by building far too many water villas (44 in one row) and killing all of the coral around the island.
When we arrived we were told that our room was available but would we like to go on the cruise. We took the opportunity which we absolutely loved, the crew did everything to make it a memorable experience, and we were lucky enough to be on a lovely sailing yacht. We went snorkelling, saw dolphins, had traditional entertainment and a bbq on the beach. Although we were expecting to visit a robinson crusoe island, the 2 islands that we visited were a bit 'strange'. Meeru, you really do need to tidy up these so called 'uninhabited islands', they are not completely uninhabited and they look 'very' untidy with shabby buildings on them. The cruise is definitely an experience worth having, it saves you having to spend money on excursions, although 2 nights is long enough, we were grateful to get back to the island.
Don't be fooled by the offer of an upgrade if you go on the cruise. We booked in the beach villas and were offered a Jacuzzi beach villa, these are on the very windy side of the island, which is not so beautiful, sea too rough to snorkel and swim and there was rubbish on the beach blown from the rubbish boat. So we had to spend 1 night here before we were moved back to the other side of the island in a beach villa. In our opinion the 200's are the best villas for being close to the calm sea. We had a look in a water villa and for the extra cost you don't really get much more for your money and quite a walk to the beach if you are in the last ones and think you would probably lose the sun in the afternoon. As we did not have our upgrade we had a voucher for a meal in the Asian Wok, we were very impressed as we entered and had a table with the doors open to see sharks below us. The starter was lovely but we could not eat the main meal which we were very disappointed with as it was far too salty. Salty enough to make it inedible.
The food on the island is excellent and the staff are friendly, although the room cleaner did only the minimum and even left hair on the side that he had pulled out of the plug hole, and the waiter should learn to be more attentive, he wasn't around very often and we had to keep asking for drinks rather than being offered.
We had a storm on our first day and on our last. The speed boat ride back to the airport was terrifying! It started off very bumpy from the waves but 20 minutes into it we had a storm (start of the monsoon season). It rained, black skies, very rough seas, the captain could not see through his windscreen and he still went very fast. We then had to endure another 40 minutes of this. No-one can predict the weather and do anything about it, but this will certainly make us think twice about returning to the Maldives.
The booking system is a very strange way of doing things, all of the other people put on the cruise did not have rooms ready for them when they arrived. You do expect to have the room you have booked and it is a disappointment to so many people to have to be downgraded before being upgraded. This obviously lets Meeru down. If you are one of the unlucky ones, then push for more than they offer you. Remember, you have paid a lot of money to have the room that you booked.
Rooms 200's are on the beach, close to the sea on the calm side of the island.

The whole Meeru Team thanks you for your review and we are happy that you enjoyed your stay with your sister. As you have mentioned, Meeru is a big island and there are lot's of activities to do, but not everyones likes that. Glad that you had fun on the sailing yacht and enjoyed the snorkeling, food and saw dolphins, it really is a wonderful experience. Good that you have found the room that you like best. Some Guest like the Beach Villas more then the Jacuzzi Water Villas. We do hope to welcome you back to Meeru one day and thank you again for your review.
