After a visit to Sri Lanka we went to the Maldives for a rest chose Meeru for the stay, on arrival found our room was not available, thought that this was only us but turned out that 10 couples had to use temporary rooms as theirs was not available, according to a rep, this was quite a common occurrence so they did not have to turn down bookings! We had to use other accommodation for that first night, this was described by a fellow traveler as "Tenko" although the room was quite nice the aspect was not. We were moved to our beach villa on the afternoon of the second day, this was obviously a newly refurbished villa which was lovely clean and bright, but not exactly on the beach still not as far off as some of the other beach villas we saw, and the ants loved the outside toilet area(stood on loads when using the loo at night). The all inclusive package was not as good as some I have used but you could use the mini bar for soft drinks which was good and all the bars were available to use but food was only available at one designated restaurant, and the availability of snack's was very limited to one bar by the pool and there was little choice unless you paid extra. There were two pools on the island but one was closed and being updated, and in general the west side of the island was tired and overgrown with weeds, the jacuzzi beach villas on this side would have been a right let down as they were way too far off the beach and even the view was poor due to the unchecked growth. The sea on the east side is in a lagoon and was generally calm but when the tide was coming in the current pushed you down the shore and it was very difficult to swim against, did manage to do some snorkelling and there is some nice sea life to watch, but as I am not a strong swimmer did not feel comfortable in the sea when the tide was causing the water to flow so strongly. Having visited two other islands previously we were disappointed in the variety of food that was on offer, as usual for this type of Holliday it was buffet style but it was all much the same each day, breakfast was the same, but that was okay, it was lunch and dinner the variety was lacking, and for island fair very little sea food available, what food there was was edible and presented okay. We found that some of the staff were a little grumpy especially the chef's however the young man who usually did the soup was very good and very pleasant if they had all been like him the atmosphere would have been so much better, it took a while for the waiter to smile as well but he did seem better after a few days, and a young lady in the bar by the pool was very good and always pleasant.
To be fair to the island they say they are updating and upgrading a lot and there was work being carried out while we were there, but we felt that the only concern was to get money off you, and there was no empathy or sympathy that your room was not ready, although they did give a $35 refund and an excursion trip was offered as compensation, also be wary of what you sign, on arrival they present you with a document to fill in and sign read it before signing and don't feel that you have to sign you don't.
The Holliday was not all unpleasant the weather was good, but it was not as relaxing as I had hoped, would I go to the Maldives again ..yes, would I go to Meeru ..no

Room Tip: Have a villa on the East side of the island, nearer the beach, sea is calmer but watch for the curre...

We have just returned from our first visit to the Maldives.Wow absolutely stunning. We stayed at the Meeru Resort and overall very impressed with it.We stayed 4 nights in the Jacuuzi water villas and it was very good.We stayed in Villa 302 which was ideal as the water is much calmer nearer the shore and the nearest bar was only 50 Metres away. We were met at the harbour by Desi who helped us check in and get to our Villa asap.
The staff at the Pavillion bar were exceptional and made our stay even better. Ranna and Peny looked after us very well always with a smile every day.
We ate at the same restaurant at the same table for 3 meals a day which we feel is not ideal.
However we got to know our waiter well and Manic was always on hand to serve us.
The drinks on offer on the All Inclusive package were limited but suited our needs.
There are 2 restaurants where you can pay extra to eat but we did not feel the need to.However if we had been there for 7 days or more we would have needed to eat elsewhere to break the monotony of 3 meals a day at the same table/restaurant.
Only negative was checkout service as Mohammed was quite rude and must be in the wrong job.
Ahmed was there when we left and was there to reassure us when there was a slight delay for our departure but got us off in plenty of time.
We would recommend this holiday for Couples ideally or families with older children.

Room Tip: We were disappointed originally when we got the nearest Villa to the beach but it turned out to be a...

Flying with British Airways, we flew from Edinburgh to Gatwick on the 14th October and then on to Male direct for 10 nights landing about 9am the following day. After a short wait in the airport we were shown to our speedboat and in just under an hour were walking down the jetty on Meeru to a welcomed, refreshing cold towel and fruit punch whilst we checked in at reception. A buggy took us to Water Villa 526 where we stayed for the duration of our stay. Ibrahim was our room boy and he did a grand job of looking after our room and we loved the flower decoration that he did to our bed one day. He got used to us going for breakfast about 9am every morning and upon our return, our room was done up and there were no interruptions for the rest of our day and our bed was always turned down and towels replenished when we returned after our evening meal. We did receive some flyers regarding the 2 night cruises with upgrades upon return but we did not take this offer up. Staying in the Water Villas which were right on the beach with a few steps down into the sea, meant we were in the North of the Island and the Maalan as our allocated Restaurant. Wow, what a dining experience that was, the Waiters and Chefs were very Professional, the food was amazing, with so much to choose from! Next door was the Uthuru bar, with comfy seating both inside and out. We were on the All Inclusive plan and for us this was the right choice. We did not eat in the Asian Wok (leaving this for our return visit) but we did enjoy the most beautiful steak, which we cooked to our liking on the hot volcanic rock at the Hot Rock Restaurant, not part of the All Inclusive package but thoroughly worth it! We enjoyed an ice coffee and the afternoon high tea with toasties on occasion and loved sitting watching the sunsets with a cold drink in hand (you could hear a pin drop, it was so relaxing). The bar staff were amazing and very attentive. We walked round the island most days in about 45 minutes, walking off the indulgences of the day before, stopping off at the Pavilion Bar on occasion to pick up a bottle of water or indulge again. Jim bought an underwater camera at Gatwick and took many photos when he was snorkeling. We reckon out of the 400+ photos that we took that there are about 350+ of different kinds of fish, sharks, rays, fruit bats and herons. We had to make a point of remembering to take some of the two of us and our accommodation before we came home…LOL…The weather was mixed but we had all the sun that our blue skins could take and came home with a nice colour. When it rained, it rained hard but it didn’t stop us from enjoying every moment of this beautiful island. The British Airways flight home was fantastic for us too, as we got up in the morning, had breakfast and we were on the go, no hanging around, just get up and go, the flight left just after 12 noon and we were home before midnight in Bonnie Scotland. We fell in love with Meeru and were sad to leave this beautiful island and the many friends that we had made, Yovan, Hisham & Nella to name a few but we will definitely go back! What else can we say but we chose this island after many months of researching and it was definitely the right one for us!

The moment we arrived on the Island till we checked out, it was an exceptional experience. We stayed in JWV and it was worth the money spent. Comfortable bed, big and clean bathroom, amazing jacuzzi and huge balcony having spectacular view of Indian Ocean makes it perfect. Our room was 730 which is on the end of JWVs.

The food was excellent too. We are strict vegetarians and hence were little doubtful about getting good options but pasta's , noodles etc were too good.

The staff was very friendly. They will assign one room boy and waiter for you so that he can take care of your choices. The AIP is a must.

We also had Over the water spa and it was excellent.

It was a good few years ago (in the month of January) that I stayed at Meeru for 2 weeks (BEFORE I had my kids), and they were the best 2 weeks of my life! It is EXACTLY how it looks in the brochures and peoples photos. After arriving at Male airport we took a boat ride to Meeru and when the boat pulled in, we couldn't believe our eyes. Absolutely beautiful! Soft white sand & crystal clear (extremely warm) sea in every different shade of blue.

If you're looking for paradise this is it! It's no good for people who want lots to do, this is a completely relaxing and unwinding holiday for beach lovers. The wildlife is beautiful too, plenty of fish to keep you company while snorkelling and the most adorable fruit bats (which look like foxes with wings).

The food was delicious, service was amazing, drinks scrummy.

We went on a couple of trips to see some other islands and we went on a sea plane which was just amazing.

I so want to go back one day..............................

We have just returned from the most amazing week in Meeru. From our very first arrival on the island until the morning we left, the staff couldn't do enough for us. We were given a special welcome with a fruit cocktail seated outside the reception, with a refreshing wet towel which was bliss after our long flight. We were then offered a free 2 night cruise which I believe is because they are often overbooked but when we turned it down it wasn't a problem and we were given our room we had booked, a beach villa. Our luggage arrived at our room right after we did and we were surprised at the size and cleanliness of the room. Our bed had been decorated with fresh flowers and we were given a basket of fruit. We did laugh at the outside bathroom and felt a little nervous showering at first if I'm completely honest, but we soon settled in. The beach was lovely, absolutely stunning and there was hardly anyone in sight. Despite the people we saw arriving, the island still feels very quiet and there is always somewhere you can hide away with a book and complete silence...bliss when we were escaping our four children for a week! For our first few days we ate in the Farivalhu restaurant. We had the most friendly and helpful waiter, Ahmed who couldn't do enough for us. He quickly learnt how we had our tea and coffee and made it just right every time, despite the fact he was also serving several other tables.
After 3 days we transferred to a jacuzzi water villa (700's) on the north end of the island. This was how we had booked our stay as we were celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary so wanted it to be special, but couldn't afford the JWV for our entire stay. We received a letter the night before our changeover to advise us we could move at 9am which was a big bonus as I hadn't thought we would move until the afternoon. Our luggage was transferred promptly and we were in our new room by 9.30, very efficient! We couldn't believe how lovely the JWV was! The beach villa had been great but this was beyond our expectations. We had uninterrupted sea views from our bed, private steps directly into the sea and everything you could wish for. These villa's are well worth the extra cost! As our room was completely private we could sleep with our curtainis open and wake each morning to the seaview, brilliant! Now we were on the other end of the island we ate at the Maalan restaurant. As before the service and choice of food were excellent. Being a fussy eater there was still always plenty of choice, with several meat and fish choices at every serving. It would have been so easy to eat ourselves silly all week as the food was so good and so different every day. On our final night we returned to our room to another beautifully decorated bed, along with another basket of fruit and a bottle of Moët, together with a card to congratulate us on our anniversary. We couldn't have been made to feel more welcome and I had tears when it was time to leave Meeru. We shall definitely be returning, as do many other guests, as we could not have wished for a more perfect holiday. My husband travels the world with his job and stays at many very expensive and 5+ star hotels, but even he was very impressed and cannot wait to return.

Third trip to the Maldives and the best yet.

Smooth transfer to the island by boat, and thankfully for my wife who hates boats, a bit more substantial than some of the boats used for transfers. If you are not good on boats take something for travel sickness about an hour before you catch your transfer. It can get quite "lumpy" at times when in the channels. We had some dolphins for a bit and flying fish to distract my wife during the transfer.

Being a combined 50th Birthday and 25th wedding anniversary trip I stumped up for a Water Villa, and if you can afford it, it is well worth the money. Not only do you get what I think is the best overall accommodation on the Island, you get the use of the Maalan Restaurant, which is a kid free zone. So if you are on your own, you can relax without kids running around. The food and drinks do differ from the restaurant down nearer reception, and service is that bit better.
The Asian Wok on the south of the island is well worth a visit, the food is excellent and reasonably priced.

Snorkelling is not brilliant on Meeru and does not have a house reef you can get to from the beach. With Meeru being on the outside of the Atoll currents can get quite strong, even close to shore, so fins/ flippers are really a must.

The Dive Centre is well run and offers dives on all the popular sites in the North Male Atoll. The boats used on Meeru are not the standard wooden dhoni’s as used on some neighbouring islands. They still don’t have fin ladders and out and in from the side, and can be a bit interesting is the sea is rough, as I experienced on one day with 4 foot swells. I found it a challenge to get people to sign up to two dive trips. Most seemed to prefer a dive in the morning and then out in the afternoon. So double boat fees, and that can add up. However did manage to get some Austrians and Germans to get into doing 2 dive trips.

Being diabetic I was overjoyed to be able to get proper porridge for breakfast, to help keep the blood sugar levels balanced when out diving. All thanks to the Head of Food & Beverage being a fellow Scot.

The one down side to the island is the Rats, the management are trying to deal with the problem by cutting down the vegetation on the inside of the island. However with no cats on the island they have no predators, and have an abundant supply of coconuts which they feed on.
The island is spotless and well maintained, and even with the rats would not hesitate going back

Room Tip: The water villas for me is the best overall accomodation on the island, 503 to 529, we had 518 and i...
