North Adams, Massachusetts was just another gritty post-industrial town until the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art opened its doors in an old brick mill complex in 1999. MassMoCA has attracted artists and art aficionados, and has helped bring new life to the area. Porches Inn, located right across the street from MassMoCA, follows its lead in blending re-use of historic buildings with contemporary design. The Inn is actually a half dozen or so Victorian era houses that have been renovated -- traditional facades with funky, postmodern interiors. My husband and I liked the luxurious touches -- Frette linens, robes, deep leather chairs in the main lounge, year-round pool and Jacuzzi -- but the blend of industrial modern and shabby chic furnishings in the somewhat cramped room that we had in the 'Gray' house was a little odd. It seemed like the designers were trying a little too hard for the artsy look. The bathroom was almost as large as the bedroom -- the space could have been allocated a bit more sensibly. Breakfast was just adequate; the breakfast room is on the small side, but fortunately we were there in late October with few other guests. Overall, the Porches is fun for a short visit, is in a convenient location, and fits in well with MassMoCA. Do shop around for a good price, though -- we were satisfied paying $125/night, but would have not been pleased at the $160 rack rate.
