When we're in the mood for a simple, not-too-pricey dinner close by, we end up at Oregano. The food is consistently high quality, and while I almost always will have the "North End," there are many other inventive choices including an excellent wild mushroom pizza. Because Claude, the owner, is Lebanese, you'll also see items on the menu reflecting his heritage. It's not a place with a great bar or cocktails to rave about, but there are terrific wines available at attractive prices. The service can be a little spotty but we tend to go later in the evening when the restaurant is less busy. It's fun to sit at the window and watch people strolling down Pleasant Street, and in the warmer months, to get an outdoor table alongside the brick-lined mall - so picturesque. We often run into friends there, but for visitors to Newburyport, it's easy to strike up a conversation in this convivial spot.
