“Just right!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2009

I was referred to the Garrison Inn by a family member we were visiting. She sure knew what I liked. The moment I walked into the room - all I could say was "Cute" or "darling." I started to sound like our mothers, but it was so true. The location is great - close to the good shops and restaurants (don't waste your time with David's that is in the basement). Extermeley friendly staff. Our stay included breadkfast. Although it wasn't the typical american or contential breakfast, it was just right. We stayed in a corner unit that usually costs more than $200/night. The hotel has a deal, 10% on the rate for Sunday - Thursday nites, or 10% for members. To become a member - see the Inn's website. The room was very comfortable, and the bath room was very nicely appointed. The room was large. Although the fire place was not functional, it was nicely done. Flat screen tv and free secured wi-fi. The Garrison Inn was just right and will stay there again.

I was really excited to stay here, the website photos looked great and they talked a lot about high standards and excellent customer service, and for the price we paid I expected that. From the moment we walked in to the moment we left our stay was a big disappointment. The concierge didn't even say hello to me or ask me how they could help. I chalked it up to her having a bad day, but that was the theme over our stay. No one who worked there seemed to care how our stay was and made us feel like we were a pain just for being there, never mind needing extra towels. It seemed as though the small handful of staff had several jobs within the hotel. This may explain the lack of customer service, maybe the owners are to blame for not hiring more staff and compromising on standards to save money. The room itself was not clean and was just plain dingy. The comforter was stained and the bathtub mildewy, the Internet connection failed and the breakfast was mediocre. I would expect this at a motel 6 for $60 a night but certainly not when your staying at a boutique hotel an paying 4 times that. Needless to say, I will not return and do not recommend this place to anyone.

For those looking for an upfront brief review, my stay at the Garrison Inn was delightful. The room was charming, clean and comfortable, staff friendly and helpful, location excellent, and breakfast delicious. I would recommend it time and again and plan on returning sometime soon for an Autumn getaway.

For those looking for a little more detail….
A friend and I had decided to take a spontaneous girls weekend trip to celebrate her 30th birthday. We decided on Newburyport and the Garrison Inn after checking out a few websites and reviews. On every encounter from the first call to our departure, the staff was friendly, accommodating, and helpful. It was a last minute trip, so we were unsure what accommodations we would get during the 4th of July weekend. Our room was absolutely lovely.

The ambiance was filled with vintage charm, with an exceptional attention to detail from a woven blanket resting on a chair to old world keys in envelope slips. Though we didn't use the fireplace, it was a quaint, romantic feature that I would love to share with my husband on a brisk New England night. It was such a comfortable environment, that one evening, we came back to the hotel just to rest for a little while, but instead stayed in our room talking and catching up for hours, perfectly comfy on the two high-back arm chairs and ottomans placed near the fireplace. The breakfast offering was a flavorful variety, cooked fresh, made to order. The location was absolutely perfect, within very close walking distance to the center of Newburyport with all its delightful shops, restaurants, and the port of course.

I would recommend the Garrison Inn to those looking for a taste of old world New England charm and character with the comforts of modern amenities. I’ll return sometime soon…I’m sure of it.

Booked the Garrison Inn as it received very good reviews and we like the small hotels offering friendly service. We felt like we were a nuisance to the front desk staff. The room was just ok. Breakfast was precooked and it tasted bland - liked the latte.

We had famiy in fourth of July, had them stay at the garrison inn, told the manager when we made the reservations to put everything on our creit card as they were our guest. They asked our guest for their credit card, when I heard this I called the manager and told them to make sure our card wass used not out guest. They promised me they would take care of it. Unfortunately they don't do what they say, our guest was charged the entire amount of the bill and the managers and general managers were so rude when I called trying to straighten this all out. We will never send anyone to the Garrison Inn again!!!!!

During a recent weekend getaway, we arrived in Newburyport without reservations. We were pleasantly surprised by the choices available at the Garrison Inn and feel the stay exceeded our expectations.

The staff at the Garrison Inn are gracious, professional, and helpful. The building is in a nice location across from Brown Square and is only a few blocks from shops and restaurants. There's plenty of overflow parking available directly across the street at the Spa Paradiso. So don't be dissuaded by what appears to be a full lot.

Our large room, overlooking Brown Square, had a good mix of period and modern features including an exposed brick wall, fireplace, and flatscreen TV. We appreciated the thoughtful touches like large comfortable chairs, wine glasses, robes, and high-end toiletries.

We had an enjoyable stay and plan to return to the Garrison the next time we're in Newburyport.

Just a wonderful experience. The room was very clean and neat. The bathroom was big and roomy. The decor was tastefully restrained, with a slightly modern sensibility. The complimentary soaps and lotions were the finest we've ever been given. Disappointingly, we didn't have time to indulge in the amazing opportunity of having a fire made up for us in the fireplace. The Garrison is exactly what you would expect when staying in New England.

The location can't be beat; just step outside and walk to the numerous restaurants, pubs or shops. The harborfront is right there and you really do not need to drive anywhere.

The night we stayed, there was a summer N'oreaster blowing through Newburyport- lots of rain and wind outside, yet we were cozy in our 4th floor Cathedral corner room. We just did not want to get up in the morning and would have gladly stayed in the very comfortable bed all day with good books had we been able.

We are looking forward to our return.
