I made rervations for 7pm at the Bootlegger Resturant in Lunenburg on Saturday Jan 21, 2011. I had planned a nice eveninng out with my two Neices who were home on school break in January. I picked Bootleggers because I wanted something a bit nicer than a chain type resturant but not a place that was just too 'fancy' as to make you feel uncomfortable.
We arrived at 6:45pm to a full-packed doorway that you couldn't even walk into (due to remodeling and some improper planning for space, it felt ridiculously crowded and we didn't kinow where to stand to keep out of the staffs way and we were not waiting outside in the cold!
My first impression of the place was 'chaos and panic'. The restaurant had an uneasy 'vibe' which instantly tells me I made the wrong choice. It took a good 5 mins to get to the desk to speak to somebody in charge that recognized we had reservations for 7pm.
Come to find out two or three big (unplanned reservations) parties showed up which sent the dining area into chaos! My first thought is they should never had accepted a big party for a non-reservation seating on a Saturday night. By doing this it left the patrons coming in with reservations waiting. We all know that a big party takes much longer to serve and they tend to linger, which is normal.
We were finally seated about 7:30pm in the dining area, to an area in the restaurant where they had pulled seating and booths to the big (unplanned) parties. I felt like we were on display, sitting in the middle of a room with tables and booths pulled in all directions. It made me feel very uncomfortable. I put on a good face to keep neices happy and didn't let on, I wanted this evenining to be special.
Our waitress was pretty nice, and I can't blame her. I could tell the staff knew they made a bad choice in accepting 3 unplanned (non-reservations) parties knowing that other patrons would be coming in for the evening that had reservations.
Our food was okay, I can' say anything was special in my opinion. One of my neices had the Salmon dish and she said she really liked it. My other neice had a ravioli dish and she said liked it very mcuh also. I had the Baked Stuffed Shrimp and I thought the stuffing was blah and plain and it wa served with no drawn butter. It was okay, but by now nothing was going to save the evening in my opinion. By now the patrons (from one of the unreserved parties) that sat behindus in the corner booth area were getting loud and obnoxious as some of them ran to the bar to catch the Patriots playoff game. This party should have been seated in the bar, they were much too louch and inconsiderate (booze was kicking in) to be seated in the more formal dining room. Other patrons in the restaurant area were starting to get mif'd also. It was ridiculous now!
Back to the food... we had some decent desserts after our Meals. I had a lemon scented cheesecake with Maine Blueberry topping, this was the highlight of my evening. It was very good, but for $8.00 for a tiny slice it better be! The menu had no prices on desserts, this is somewhat deceiving. I am not price conscious, but I do like to know prices in advance.
At the end of the night, I didn't hold anything against our waitress, I still tipped her a good 25%, but for a $200 evening I thought it was just not worth it.
Will I try this place again, I don't know.
I may go back once the remodel is complete. Maybe they will have corrected the waiting area/reception desk and correct the flow of the dining area so it feels comfortable.
Word of advice, don't pull the tables away from the middle of the dining room and then sit guests in that area (middle of the room) where you feel like you are on display (sitting in the middle of the room by yourself)!
