“I am guessing it's going to get better!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2012 via mobile

Recently renovated-not quite ready for prime time. Beautiful property. Nature. How do you decide between rustic and too rustic. For the price, too rustic. Sheets and towels and pillows brand new!! Mattresses old. Spring on pull out broken. Property is 5 star; room amenities is 3 star. No ice machines;no food service except a tavern on weekend. No Phone in room which means no method of getting in contact w front desk for questions, housekeeping or maintence issues which we had all 3. This is frustrsting when this occurs at night. Breakfast only til 10. It's vacation time. They also charge for more than 2 in the room which means they charge for each child. Pool not heated and freezing. They front desk staff all kind and helpful incl the owner.

Thank you for your kind words. We want to sincerely apologize for the services that we should have delivered, but did not. We are working on addressing all the points you mentioned. July 13 and 14th weekend was our first week of opening and we had teething problems. We were not prepared to receive so many guests. Not only were we fully booked for all the rooms with AC, we were also booked for the rooms that did not have AC. For this part, we have no excuse.

As we point out on our own web site, our rooms are simple, yet well appointed and clean. It is clearly listed what amenities are offered in the room. For all rooms, though TV and AC were not officially offered, we managed to overcome a tight deadline and upgrade the primary electric service into the buildings and run new wires into each room to bring in top quality flat panel TVs with full service into a majority of the rooms. We also ran new wires to bring AC to all of our rooms. We offered full buffet breakfast with hot meals over the weekend, and although it was scheduled to be open only from 8am to 10am, the terrace dining room was open until 12pm everyday.

For the telephones, unfortunately the main trunk of telephone wires was damaged during trenching jobs when putting in a new water main and the phone service was lost to the rooms. It was made clear that there are no phones in the room. In the future we are making plans to install one or two phones in hallways for emergency use. With cell phones so popular and that cell phone reception at our location is really good, we may not provide phone to each room.

We want to apologize for our lack of service on the front desk. Many of us were pulled away to run errands for our guests: for example, pick people up from bus station, taking and picking up guests at Tanglewood shows, Jacobs Pillow shows, getting mini fridges for guests. We want to apologize that we did not have enough staff to take care of everyone.

Since that weekend we have stocked the rooms with hair dryers, mini fridge, iron board. The old electric plugs in the room cannot run all these things if it wasn't that we went through construction and brought proper electric into the rooms and bathrooms.

Many people booked the rooms through a third party site and did not read about our property at all. Eastover's main goal is to keep the 550 acres of land as nature friendly and peaceful in the way it is. We want to keep the construction to a minimum. Though we have options to convert the property to a five star hotel, it's our choice to offer a place where people have a chance to experience simplicity. Our life is becoming more and more complicated and our kids are getting more and more confused by all the materials and glitzy enticing advertisements in front of their eyes . We would like to share with others the way we enjoy Eastover and how fulfilling that experience has been.

Eastover is a close encounter with nature, we maintain vast open meadows and trails for everyone to enjoy. We also have huge numbers of characteristic old buildings for people to enjoy. We are not one or two buildings on a parking lot. Besides of huge capital cost to bring this 550 acres property to code and able to be enjoyed by everyone, maintenance cost for the open meadows and common buildings are well over 40% of our operation cost. If you are not an outdoor person and you did not have the time to enjoy our nature, you are not going to get your money's worth for being at Eastover.

During the weekend of the fashion show, many artistic kids from a film production company joined us. The feed back from them has been very rewarding and confirmed our vision for Eastover. Most of the time these 20 year and older kids spent the time just sitting around on our open patio or grass field, swimming, hiking, or running up and down the hills. Here is what they said: "Eastover is such a cool place, the view, the mountains, and the forest, so close to town and everything. Although there are many sports amenities to choose from, they are just there for us to use. There are no packed activities, it's so relaxing that there is no set time for us to be anywhere. We enjoy just lying on the grass, watching the stars, listening to the birds in the morning. The rooms are simple, yet elegant and tranquil, it just set up the right mood. We just love the design. No luxury, yet a perfect escape from the crazy world around us. The eco-friendly AC unit is so quiet and comfortable. Though there were TVs in the room, we did not even bother to turn them on. We just simply spent quality time together in such a beautiful place which we cannot even believe that it still exists."

Eastover will be just as described for a while. There will be no luxury bathrooms until the mansion is done and able to offer rooms, although every cottage room does have it's own bathroom. It is more of a retreat for people taking their time to come to relax and enjoy the setting and nature. It's not for everyone and not a transit place where you just sleep for a night and pack up and go. It's not for people or kids who come to spend time in a room and watch TVs. Your money will be better spent somewhere else if your kids are not interested in the nature.
