“Wonderful stopover - not a single false move”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2012

Impeccable service. Dan the bartender, in particular, was helpful in ways far above and beyond the call of duty, but everyone from the front desk on was terrific. Everyone knows everything - I heard waitstaff and chefs give driving directions and recite the full Tanglewood summer program. Food is good and breakfast buffet is great - and we have seen a lot of tepid breakfast buffets in our time. Special diet requests were cheerfully accommodated.

Rooms are clean and quiet - I don't think there is turndown service but we arrived late so it did not really matter. We stayed in the mansion which is where breakfast and formal dinner are served but, unlike other places we have stayed where this is true the dining room smells do not permeate the rooms upstairs.

It is May - the off season - and the property is undergoing some construction so there were minor parking changes but no noise at all on a weekend.

Room Tip: Mansion rooms are typically for adults only. Breakfast and formal dinner are served on the main flo...

There one night only, and the room in Beecher's Cottage was spacious and very well appointed (tho showing it's age or "character"). I didn't take advantage of all the Cranwell offers, which is a lot, and tho my meal at Sloane's Tavern was not very good, everyone else in my party was very satisfied. As a spa getaway for my spouse, it would be excellent, but just not a great venue for a business meeting.

We stayed here for one night as a brief getaway. We were delighted both with the accommodations and the dining. The views of the mountains are lovely. The pool and spa were connected to our cottage via tunnel, so navigating was easy. The dining room was charming and the cuisine superb. David told us about the literary history of the Mansion; we were delighted to know that we were dining in the same room as Mark Twain, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Edith Wharton. An evening in "The Gilded Age" cannot be beat! Highly recommend!

I recently enjoyed an overnight stay with a close friend of mine at the historic Cranwell Resort nestled in the Berkshire Mountains. The Mansion of the resort sits high atop a hill with views of the Berkshire Mountains all around. The other buildings on the resort are well placed so that the mountains views are not compromised. The buildings themselves have real historical character and beauty. The grounds are meticulously manicured. It's really very beautiful.

The friendly staff at the front desk checks you in with a smile and makes you feel welcome immediately. They are very informative about the location of everything onsite and your room key holder has a very handy fold-out resort map attached, with important phone numbers for all different departments within the resort and information about available activities. It is very convenient that the resort lets you put everything on your room charge so there is no need to carry cash around with you.

We enjoyed a stay in a Classic Room of Founder's Cottage. It was very roomy and spacious. There were two queen beds, two comfortable chairs, an armoire with some drawers and a television, a small table and a desk. There was also a "pantry" area with a counter, a sink, refrigerator and Keurig machine. The bathroom was also plenty roomy, with a jacuzzi tub and shower, a toilet, and a double vanity. There was a closet with a safe and robes that you could wear to the spa, if you so desired.

The Spa at Cranwell offers a wide variety of salon and spa services. Prior to your treatments, after you check into the spa's main desk, there is a locker room where you can change and store your personal belongings in a secure locker. This is also where you will find entrance into the sauna, steam room and pool. Save at least ten minutes to enjoy the quiet room where you can sit by the fireplace and enjoy tea or water while you wait to be called by your therapist.

While we were there, we experienced several treatments:

Relaxing Massage
Deep Tissue Massage
Aromatherapy Salt Scrub
Pedicure

All of the treatments were excellent and used high quality ingredients. The therapists were very professional. As an added convenience, the service charge is charged automatically to your spa treatment, so you don't have to carry cash with you to the treatment rooms.

Cranwell Resort and Spa also has a variety of fitness classes available. We chose to take a spin cycle class in the early morning. One of the students was a first-time spinner and received excellent instruction. The instructor took the time prior to the class and throughout the entire class to be sure the new student understood the terminology and moves so she could enjoy the class safely. This one-one instruction never interfered with the overall class for the more experienced students. Everybody is welcome in their classes and is made to feel comfortable whether experienced in fitness or not. Folks wanting to try a new class couldn't try it in a more comfortable environment.

We had to opportunity to eat at both the Wyndhurst Restaurant and in The Music Room for breakfast. Both areas boast some beautiful views of the mountains. The food was very high quality and we could see why they earned their Zagat rating. Service here was just as consistent as it was throughout the resort. The wine list is extensive and there are spa dining options for those individuals who are calorie conscious.

I would recommend this resort to absolutely everybody. Families are welcome here, as well as golfing groups, couples, groups, friends, wedding parties, etc.

I planned a bachelorette weekend for 10 friends at Cranwell and it could not have been better. I chose Cranwell because I visited in 2005 and remember it being wonderful. This visit was even better than the last. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous and the hotel ensures that the small details are accounted for, like having adirondack chairs arranged on a beautiful lawn. We had rooms in the Beecher's Cottage and they were huge and luxurious with beautiful views of the grounds and sitting areas. Everyone involved remarked upon how sumptuous the spaces felt. When I visited in 2005, I stayed in a smaller room as part of a spa package. Although I remember the accomodations being very nice, the rooms in Beecher's Cottage were outstanding. We were able to arrange three rooms next to each other (two adjoining) so we could all be together. We visited the fitness center and spa on Saturday and had a wonderful time. The workout room is free to all guests and very clean and well-appointed. The whole spa building has a great feeling of openess and gets a lot of light through beautiful skylights. I took a yoga class. The class was great but I was sad to hear that it was an additional $15 charge. Cranwell is not an inexpensive place and is designed to be a spa setting so it seemed petty to charge extra. After the class, I had a deep tissue massage, which I highly recommend and used the spa's steam room, sauna and whirlpool. Althought the place was packed, as the previous reviewer also noted, the spa areas were very well-maintained and still felt restful and relaxing. The only meal we ate on the property was dinner Friday night at the casual Sloane's Tavern. It is nice to have both formal and informal restaurant options and Sloane's has a great atmosphere. The food is good, not great. Just one more note: every staff person we encountered at Cranwell was helpful and pleasant from the bellman who helped with our luggage to the concierge who recommended bars in the area (The Heritage House in Lenox, it is lots of fun!).

Room Tip: I would recommend rooms in Beecher's Cottage. They are large and very quiet.

I went to Cranwell Resort for a girls' spa weekend. We arrived on a Friday afternoon and were greated by wonderful front desk staff. We checked into our room and sat down out on the patio for our room and could look at the Berkshires. It was breathtaking. We stayed for 2 nights. The hotel room was nice and spacious. The bathroom was the biggest bathroom I've ever seen in a hotel. It had double sinks, a shower stall and a soaking tub with plenty of room to spare. The beds were not the most comfortable, both my friend and I woke up with sore backs. The stay was wonderful and relaxing overall. We had spa treatments scheduled for Saturday afternoon. The quiet room was really, really, really busy and wasn't very quite with all the traffic. There wasn't a free seat in the place. Our treatments were wonderful and my estitician actually suggested a different treatment than the one I had originally booked, and I was credited the $50 difference! I had a deep cleansing facial and was SO happy with the result. The treatment was relaxing, with neck, arm, head and shoulder massage. I'm getting relaxed all over again just thinking about it. We had breakfast in the mansion on Sunday morning. A great buffet with a wonderful, entertaining chef making fantastic eggs and omelets.

Room Tip: We were in the founders building and had a great view, and were off the beaten path a little bit.

We stayed at the Cranwell Resort to break up the drive on return from PA. It was the best choice after a day of driving to stay at this luxurious resort. The room was wonderful and spacious. My husband commented on how comfortable the mattress was-I agree. The dinner was the best we had enjoyed the entire trip. Of course, the hotel itself is an historic building...like staying at Downton Abbey! :-)
