There's a very good reason why Alta ranks #1 in this region of many dining choices.
First is their location in the heart of lovely Lenox, second is their welcoming attitude, third is their knowledge of what a good dining experience should include. An hospitable cozy setting, staff that is so knowledgeable in an understated way, no airs and no pretenses. Leave that at the door.
Their porcini mushroom linguini paired with a New Zealand Villa Maria Sauvigon Blanc ( suggested by our waiter, Dave) on a snowy December night was a perfect counterpoint to a long day of getting to Lenox from Washington during an eastern coast snow storm. Reservations are a must. Glancing around the room on this snow bound night, there were no unoccupied tables, but dinner guests all enjoying themselves during the holiday time. In one way or another they had made their way to Alta. We arrived by taxi with the idea of leaving in the same manner. The snow meant a one hour delay for a return taxi. Believe it or not, but the proprietor insisted on driving us back to our hotel in one of the staff's cars, insisting that he liked driving in this kind of weather. No surprise when you understand that he comes from the French swiss border and knows alpine driving. Now THAT generous gesture qualifies this dining establishment for the Above and Beyond Award.
