The 1640 Hart House's reputation might have skewed my expectations - it clearly is supposed to be the best restaurant in Ipswich, and it certainly has a lot going for it, but not quite enough to get a rating better than average.
The atmosphere of the place is awesome. The restaurant is located in a beautiful building from - guess - 1640 and our group of eight got a small private room upstairs. Great atmosphere, full points for that.
Unfortunately they had these really comfortable "chairs" and that actually made eating less comfortable. They were great chairs for relaxing, but not for eating, maybe more suitable in a board room than a restaurant. But you know what, that's not something I would knock down the review for.
What I did knock down the rating for was the food. I had a clam chowder and that was actually very good, I utterly enjoyed it.
For my main I ordered Sea Food Risotto and that came with a side salad. The salad was so cold that I didn't enjoy it at all and left it. I appreciate that restaurants need to prepare things like salads, but chilling & serving them at such a low temperature is a no go - it ruins the enjoyment of the food.
The risotto itself also was a disappointment. The cook clearly was going for quantity there - it was a massive portion way too big for anyone to finish. The risotto also had a bit of an awkward consistency, too much cream, it almost felt like a very thick soup, it didn't taste much like a risotto at all. I wasn't too pleased and that was an expensive dish for not enjoying it.
Over all, I know that the vast majority of our group actually enjoyed their meal, so I might just have picked the wrong main. The food wasn't bad, it was average and that's what the review reflects.
