We were in great need of rest and relaxation and wanted to go someplace special for our anniversary. We could not have picked a better place. This is a gracious, unpretentious and very comfortable inn. It is run with impeccable professionalism by people eager to help you find your way around. The bed and pillows were comfortable, the towels terrific and the breakfast served by lovely young girls. The real mystery is how they got a breakfast chef whose baking skills merit her own bakery in any major city.

If you are looking for glitz and elegance, this may not be the place for you. If you are looking for warmth, comfort and exceptional scenery this is not a place to be missed. The magnificent beach is just a two minute drive away and the inn nicely provides beach chairs, umbrellas, beach bag and towels. Our fellow guests seemed similarly pleased. You should know, however, that the "ocean view" is quite distant and perhaps more dramatic from the third floor. We wanted to be on the second floor and would have been just as happy with a view of only the marsh - which is spectacular.

We enjoyed our stay at the Inn. The view from the Inn is incredible. The porch has comfortable seating with views of both the marsh and the ocean. There are plenty of birds to watch, as well. The staff were incredibly kind. They went out of their way to attend to our needs, and to anticipate items that might make our stay more comfortable - like insect repellant! (the green heads and mosquitoes were the ONLY negative aspect of this stay). The breakfast was incredible. One of the best I've enjoyed on this trip. The chef even made my husband a special breakfast after learning he had a tooth extraction prior to our visit that was giving him a bit of trouble. If you are looking for a place for some down time, this is it. There aren't many activities in the area, and the rooms are void of televisions; however, the sitting areas, library books and serene views more than compensate.

Growing up just north of Boston, Crane beach was my family's go-to beach since I was 5 or so. Over the 45 years between then and now I've roamed all over the beaches, the Castle Hill grounds, and back when it was ok, the dunes too.

My girlfriend and I stayed just one night in the Teller room a few weeks ago and here's what was good or great:

-- Our room and what was in it
-- The lobby and restaurant for breakfast
-- Jill, who worked the front desk the evening we were there, and with just a little coaching, made a fantastic martini
-- Breakfast, with yogurt and granola and nearby Appleton Farms of Ipswich, good coffee, and other great stuff
-- The front porch, lawn and the sweeping / panoramic views into the marshes, some nearby, some distant and the beach beyond
-- A tour of the Crane mansion ... wow was that ever impressive and well done

Lastly, though I usually like to keep to myself at places like this, want to mention that the other guests we happened to bump into were all lovely people, happy and appreciative it seemed, to be able to share such a wonderful place and experience.

P.S., if you can make it, dinner at the nearby Hart House, a tavern built in 1640 (if you can believe it) was another round of super atmosphere, friendly people, and amazing food and drink.

I attended a wedding here at the beginning of April and stayed for two nights. The accommodations were so nice and relaxing that it was tough to leave. I'm not a "B&B" guy but the combination of the great room we stayed in and the grounds surrounding the Inn was so spectacular.
I grew up very close to this property and have spent a lot of time at Crane Beach and Castle HIll. The views are gorgeous, the service was great, and the bed & room were very comfortable and serene. I highly recommend a stay here.

Room Tip: Most rooms face the expansive marsh and the Crane Beach dunes. You can also see all the way to the...

If your dream is to stay in a country Inn, my vote is for The Inn at Castle Hill. The rooms are clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated. They remind me of the beautiful inns in the English countryside. Located on the Crane estate, you can watch the tides flow in and out twice a day in the salt marshes which surround much of the estate. It's also walking distance from one of Massachusetts' most beautiful beaches. Breakfasts are feasts with fresh fruit, fresh baked goods and a special egg dish each mourning. The location is minutes away from the historically rich New England towns of Ipswich and Essex. This intrepid traveler gives this inn top honors. Rachel N.

Room Tip: We were on the 3rd floor and the temperature was always perfect.

The inn and grounds are lovely and the rooms meet all expectations. They just bought a load of bikes which are perfect for exploring the estate or nearby beaches. On one cold night in april they lit the fire in the lobby and served us wine while we admired the art and objects on display.

The breakfast and afternoon cookies are quite tasty

Only two comments. Let the wait staff use a pad as they never one got the breakfast order correct in 5 days ( in their defense we were a big group that all materialized the second breakfast started). The kitchen needs to figure out a better way to store the fruit for the generous fruit salad to keep it fresh.

Room Tip: Many of the rooms have sweeping views of the marshes if you want to spring for it

This was the second time I've stayed at Castle Hill. My husband and I decided to take advantage of a mid-week off-season special which gave us a second night for $99. Our room, Florence, was lovely with 2 window seats looking out to the ocean, a comfortable king bed, and well-equipped bathroom with tub (though the outlet by the sink was loose and did not work) Check-in went smoothly, and James was helpful and accommodating. I remembered him from a previous summer stay.
Breakfast was delicious, but there was a serious omission the first morning. What was supposed to be an egg roulade with red peppers, cream cheese, carmelized onions and smoked salmon came out with no discernible filling, and certainly no salmon. When we questioned the waitress (a very sweet, young girl who may have been inexperienced) she said all the ingredients were incorporated into the egg mixture. Hmmmm...... Then, the table next to us posed the same question, and the woman requested a side plate of salmon, which she was given (wish I'd thought of that). Finally, the table on our other side received their plates, and their roulade was fat and filled with the the promised ingredients. The man at that table leaned over to us and said, "This doesn't look at all like what you got" and he was right. So, what happened...did the waitress bring out the first two tables' plates before they were "finished"? Was the chef asleep? There were only 4 rooms eating that day, so it wasn't exactly busy. Other than that, the food was delicious, and the next day's breakfast was delivered as described. Perhaps the wait staff is is new (the Inn opened for the season on April1). When I left an empty tissue container out for refill, the housekeeper didn't notice it. I think she was still in training.
The other quibble regards our checkout. I had been told on the phone when I reserved the rooms (one cannot do so online) that on top of the special rate, we would be given the 10% Trustees of the Reservation member discount on the final figure. The woman who checked us out flatly denied that the discount would apply with any other special rate. "We have to make money somehow" she said. Hmmmmmm, again.
We hope to return to this property, and will be more proactive should similar problems occur. T

Room Tip: There are only 13, so read the descriptions and choose accordingly. Be aware, that in terms of quiet...
