“wonderful, quick getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2011

I surprised my husband with a quick overnight getaway, and we could not have been more pleased with our experience. Bob, the innkeeper, went out of his way to make us feel welcome and pampered. It was my husband's birthday, and we greatly appreciated the complimentary bottle of champagne. Our room was beautifully decorated, comfortable and clean, with breathtaking views. I would highly recommend a visit. We plan to return.

Room Tip: Mine has a working fireplace. It was fun to cuddle up in front of the fire on a chilly night.

Having lived in the area for 16 years, we frequented Crane Beach and the Castle, and now return each year to visit friends. We have stayed at the inn a number of times and have always been pleased with our accommodations. The breakfast fare is varied each day, and the service is very good. The nearby beach (easy walk) is one of the best in the world, and offers hiking through the dunes as well. The greenhead fly season is July (check the moon phase) and can be a little unpleasant, especially close to the marsh areas, but insect spray will mitigate the problem. It's only one month, and so there is plenty of opportunity to plan around it if you wish.

Room Tip: The rooms vary by size and price, and so it's your choice.

We loved staying here as a weekend getaway from Connecticut. Driving here from Connecticut on Labor Day Friday, we had none of the awful traffic on I-95 that we would have had driving to Cape Cod. The estate on which the inn is situated is magnificent. We stayed in the most inexpensive room, which is a little loud because it is adjacent to the common areas and the inn's office. The house is thoughtfully restored; it was the original owner's "farm" house though in reality it was a gracious summer home for another Chicago magnate who sold the property to the Cranes. The breakfasts are wonderful and quite large. As others have noted, you have continental breakfast items as well as fresh fruit and then a hot breakfast as well. During our trip we had omelettes, eggs, waffles, and other treats. The afternoon teas feature baked goods like cookies, and iced tea as well as the option to purchase wine and other alcoholic beverages. The estate is enough to absorb the weekend if you bring a great book to read on the enormous porch. We took tours of the estate and they were very informative and enjoyable. The estate is magnificent and you could spend a lot of time simply walking the grounds, which are open to guests. We also visited the surrounding towns on Cape Ann. The staff at the inn made great recommendations for dinner and we enjoyed them all! I definitely recommend grabbing a great book and spending the weekend here!

This was our second stay at the Inn and we loved the experience once again. The helpfulness of the people working here, the spotless rooms with fine linens, the views from the porch, and the tasty breakfast all made for a delightful experience.

In celebration of 25 years of marriage, my husband and I stayed at the Inn at Castle Hill and enjoyed exploring the beaches and historic properties and landscapes in the area. Staying at the Inn was a real treat. We stayed in the Cornelius room. This room is lovely - done in muted colors, comfortable and relaxing. The windows look out over the salt march and ocean. We woke in the mornings to see the soft morning light of the sunrise and glistening water off Crane beach.

The rest of the Inn was beautiful, too. Breakfast in the light and airy dining room was a modified continental-style with a hot entree offered. The pecan-banana pancakes were heavenly. The omelette with local cheese and spinach was wonderful as were the artfully arranged fruit plates that proceeded them.

The staff was friendly and helpful, giving us tips about local restaurants and a fun concert within walking distance of the Inn.

I just can't imagine a more perfect setting in which to celebrate a special occasion.

My husband and I stayed overnight at the Inn at Castle Hill and we had a fabulous time. The staff was accommodating and gracious and went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. The room was exceptionally clean, comfortable and beautiful (the Mine) and breakfast was delicious. Even though all of the rooms were booked, the Inn was quiet and peaceful and it was wonderful to be able to sit on the front porch with a cup of tea and read while enjoying a view of the ocean. Refreshments (cookies, coffee, tea, juice, etc.) were available at any time of day which was a plus in my book. So nice to be able to stay somewhere for an overnight and not feel that we had to drive around all day to find things to do. The grounds of the Inn and the Great House up the hill, kept us busy all day. And the beach and town were both 5 minutes away. The Inn also graciously provided a tote and beach towels which made it simple for us to go to the beach. They also keep a large book of menus in the lobby which makes it convenient for making a dinner choice. We loved it there and can't wait to go back!

My wifes family rented the entire inn, all 10 rooms for a family wedding in July 2010. There was a hidden fee of 10% added because we booked the entire inn. Most places will give you a discount when book large blocks of rooms. There were other hidden charges as well. Not only do you pay hotel taxes like everywhere else but they have a special extra charge for the estate. I think it was 15% in addition. The staff was very friendly and the rooms were very nice and clean. The included breakfast was just OK with limited quanities and selections. The service at breakfast was mediocre at best. College students doing summer work do not make the best wait staff. I would book this hotel again only for another special reason in this area only because other hotels are not close.
