This B&B was not our choice, we were given this as a gift and we needed to use the gift certificate before it expired. The property is located in a secluded wooded area which is truly lovely. Unfortunately, during the walk from the lot to the front door we were knocked out by the very fresh strong scent of recently applied manure to the landscaping--not a great welcome.
There was a lengthy note attached to the door for us, giving us detailed information as to where our room was, local amenities, etc. and an explanation that the hosts were at a family wedding and would not be available to welcome us. As much as we understand that family commitments come before business, we made these reservations a month beforehand and I assume the hosts were aware of this event at that time and they did not alert us to this when we made our reservation. Out of consideration to our hosts, we left several phone messages letting them know that we would be checking in an hour later than we previously expected, and when we didn't receive any return phone calls we broke plans in nearby Northampton to come to the B&B and check in immediately, worried that there might be a problem with our reservation since no one was answering the phone and we weren't getting any return calls. To find the note on the door was rather off-putting in this circumstance, although we understand why they did it. I just wish they had the forethought to let us know when we made the reservation that they wouldn't be there.
We were given THE GREEN SUITE, the only room at this time of year that is available without the two night minimum. They describe it on their website as, "The suite is located at the back of the home on the ground level with a private entrance." What they're really saying in a veiled way is that this is a basement walkout that has been remodeled as a room. As such, all the windows are in direct eye level with anyone walking outside, and requires all the shades being closed if you want any privacy from the people walking around outside--and since it is the basement, when you do close all the drapes it's very dark and feels like a crypt. Strangely, there is also a series of glass french doors leading to the "private entrance" which is actually not an entrance/access to the parking lot but to their private living space! These french doors do not have any shades, so you are unable to have true privacy, and if people were to walk by in the evening when you had your lights on, they could see directly to the main bed. A little unnerving.....
Also adding to the "basement" feel of this suite was the full sized couch that was in the hallway in front of our room. This was clearly not an interior design decision, but seemed more like a storage space problem--we actually had to lift our suitcases over it in order to get into our room since the couch took up much of the hallway space. I felt like I was back in my college dorm again.....
But I will say that the breakfast in the morning was really delicious, and the room we had, albeit lacking in romance or intimacy, was very clean and well maintained. It is not too far from Northampton, either, which is convenient. I think the really big problem for us was that we were looking for a romantic getaway, but were in a room that was better suited to a family stay.
All in all, I would not return again because I feel there is a great disparity between what the innkeepers are providing and the high fee they're charging. We've been to alot of B&B's, and have a good amount of experience with this to judge, and this is an expensive B&B with minimal ambiance. It is clear from our experience and the other reviewers that these innkeepers are in the business of maximizing all avenues of profit from the property and not necessarily enjoy running a bed and breakfast--the finesse and personal touches that we come to expect with B&Bs aren't here. For example, when departing, we met a man who rents an apartment in the house who has a kennel of about 8 dogs which is on the same property in a location adjacent to the parking lot, not even 100 feet from the front door! I can only imagine what the barking would have sounded like in the morning had we not been staying in the basement!
