We stayed at the Quality Inn Greenfield MA on 12/31/10 & 1/1/11, and it was the absolute worst hotel experience we have had in a very long time. Worse yet, the hotel has a 24 hour cancellation policy which means that even after we arrived for the first night, we couldn't get our $$ back for that night, NOR for the 2nd night we had booked.
We checked in, and headed for our room. There were discarded mattresses & sheets thrown down a stairwell just beyond the lobby. That was our first clue that this would not be a pleasant stay.
The 'non-smoking' room we got smelled like years of stale smoke. The mattress was covered with a plastic wrap that made sleeping impossible due to sweating & crinkling noises. On New Year's Day, housekeeping knocked at 1045AM, and informed us that if we wanted our room cleaned they had to do it before 11AM (we told them not to bother). There were moldy spots on the tiles, as well as the ceiling in the bathroom. Walls were so paper-thin that we could hear another guest singing & playing his guitar even though he was 4 rooms away. There was no lock on the sliding door, just a bar to hold it in place. The curtain across the slider was too narrow to block out the extremely bright light positioned just outside of our slider.
The breakfast was unbelievably horrible: I made a waffle, and asked the attendant if she had some syrup. The answer was no. I asked again the 2nd morning, and the answer was still no. The english muffins were stale. They served something that was shaped to look like a fried egg, but it clearly wasn't an egg-I have no idea what it was.
When I went to the hotel desk to ask when checkout time was, I had to wait while the clerk (who appeared to be around 18) finished talking with her 2 friends who had come to visit.
There were several holes in the outside of the building where birds had pecked through and made their nests. The building was in a sad state of disrepair.
I could go on, but you get my drift. Again, the fact that we paid in advance and had to abide by a 24 hour cancellation policy forced us to stay in this place that we would have walked out of, otherwise.
