Description: Fantastic new venture run by J.D. Hairston, mad-scientist/cook and partner-in-crime Anika Balaconis. The menu offers Tex-Mex-like cookin' with a variety of tacos (including the delicate and hand-corned "lengua" tongue and beef tacos) with an incredible array of toppings from pickled onions and jalapenos to flavored sour creams, goat cheeses and more. From a saltcod po'boy to the best grits n' eggs this side of the Mississippi -- homemade nut brittles and "cherry pie cookies" -- this cafe is tailoring itself to the tastes of the community and creating a wonderfully welcoming place with an interesting and diverse menu for all to enjoy. The Vegie Melt is to die for!

“a taste of Texas comes to New England”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2012

This new cafe on the corner of Main and Chapman (previously Cafe Siren and before that, Cafe Koko) is chock full of interesting and delicious concoctions from the kitchen of Brownsville, TX-bred J.D. and business partner Anika. They offer up tacos, sandwiches, salads, breakfast items, baked goods, coffee/tea drinks and daily specials (Friday's was "Crispy Pig's Ear Salad with watermelon, arugula and pickled Thai chilis" I kid you not!). J.D. corns his own beef and then serves it up on 2 mini corn tortillas with a scallion sour cream topping; it's very tasty. Recently I gave him a cow's tongue that came with the local 1/4 cow I'd purchased and he corned that too for tacos. They make EVERYTHING there: all sauces, gravies, pickled goods, taco toppings and more... the menu is varied and ranges from the aforementioned tacos to grits 'n eggs with a side of collard greens to a super popular Vegie Melt sandwich. While at the counter chatting with Anika you can watch J.D. whip around the kitchen, seemingly in 5 places at once. The front case is full of baked items are so much fun to look at and taste: cherry pie cookies, Easter egg hunt cupcakes (with tall green icing blades of grass and colored jellybeans), Astronaut brittle and triple ginger scones. All served up by Anika with a smile. I would be very pleased if they stay for a good long time. The food, service and atmosphere are all fun, relaxed and welcoming, the food is inventive, wholesome and delicious.
