“It's all about Marja”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2012

Yes, the house is charming and the rooms are well done and clean. But all the personality comes form the owner, Marja. We are not usually B&B-ers but more experiences like this could make us change our minds.

This charming bed and breakfast is a real find. The innkeeper Marja is very warm and friendly. The house and grounds are beautiful. The town of Great Barrington is fun to explore. We'll definitely come back here.

4th visit was a great as the first 3. We used to also stay in Lenox at the Lenox Club, which while more convenient for some trips, it doesn't compare to how we feel at the Wainwright. I feel like I'm going home to visit family. The place is charming, warm, appointed with an old European flair, and, most importantly, immaculate. The Wainwright is its own destination, but there is plenty to see and do within a 10 minute lovely stroll. Go there!

Room Tip: Rooms in the front are noisier, but we slept fine. Quieter rooms are in the back.

There is nothing not to like about the Wainwright Inn. The inn itself is charming old house with spacious yet cozy rooms on three floors. Several have fireplaces, and all have comfortable beds and nice bathrooms. I was there as part of a family gathering -- we rented out the entire inn -- so I can attest to the fact that every room truly is lovely. As nice as the house is, it is the innkeepers who make the Wainwright so special. Marja and Robert are incredibly gracious, accommodating and funny. They have that gift for being there just when you need them, and disappearing into the wallpaper when you don't. Finally, the inn breakfasts were huge and delicious. All of us, from ages 7 to 80 were equally delighted!

Room Tip: There are two family suites which contain a twin bedded room and a queen or king room sharing one ba...

My wife and I were looking for a weekend escape to catch up on a ton of reading, and we happened by the Wainwright Inn. After speaking to the Innkeeper, Marja, on the phone, I knew it would be great. Well, it completely surpassed my expectations. Firstly, it's a beautiful, huge house. Secondly, the hospitality is the best you can possibly hope for. Marja and Robert are caring and thoughtful and they think of everything one might want for a perfectly relaxing getaway. Darryl makes the most incredible omelette on Earth, and he's hysterical to boot. I know it seems like I'm gushing, but we had a truly great time and we've already talked about going back. We appreciate a great atmosphere when we find one. Thanks to the whole bunch of them at the Wainwright. We won't forget it! - Kelly & Jo

Room Tip: We stayed in the Garden Room. It's beautiful and quiet.

I cannot say enough nice things about this Inn. My husband and I just spent New Year's weekend there and enjoyed every moment of our stay. The innkeeper, Marja, was so incredibly helpful and hospitable. The room, the breakfast, the decor, its location... everything was perfect. We'll be back!

This beautiful and historic old building on the south side of Great Barrington is a landmark, but the really extraordinary features are inside. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, the breakfasts creative and delicious, the authentic Victorian decor charming (there's an upside-down Christmas tree in the parlor during the holidays) -- and innkeepers Marja and Robert and breakfast cook Darryl sincerely want you to feel at home and know how to do it.

Various members of our large family had been staying in the inn during the last week of December, and the 27th was my daughter and my turn. We arrived after dinner. In the middle of the night we were both hit with a ferocious stomach bug that made it almost impossible to leave our king-sized (thank goodness) bed for about 30 hours. Without being the least bit intrusive, Marja took care of us like a mom. She brought us apple juice and crackers, bananas and ginger ale, and made a trip to the store for gatorade. She arranged for us to stay another night in the same room when we had been scheduled to move, without even being asked. And Darryl fixed us a special light breakfast the morning we left. It was such a nice feeling. We're forever grateful, and we're looking forward to coming back when we're able to eat!

Room Tip: The upstairs "West Wing" is great for families (or sick people) -- two great rooms and a l...
