“A gem of a place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013

We decided to take a long weekend to ski in the Berkshires and saw this place was highly reviewed. We enjoyed the property very much--the rooms were clean and well kept. We noticed a very personal touch in everything--the decor, breakfast, service, etc. The owners even made a point to send us a quick text the evening of our arrival since a winter storm was there and might delay us past 10pm when the office closes for the night--they wanted to let us know if we were in fact delayed they could give us directions so we could still get into our room. We plan on returning next winter for more ski weekends.

Room Tip: The property has free wifi; however, the signal is weak/non-existent as you get away from the office...

As ever, thanks for reviewing us in such gracious and glowing terms, and sorry you had a problem with the wifi. It's unnerving these days when you can't get online: we just stayed at a fairly 'happening' hotel in NYC and their entire system failed over our three day stay, creating bedlam amongst the Facebook junkies staying there. Although it can be liberating to be forced out of your web-based world for a while, we certainly tired of watching old re-runs of the Brady Bunch.

That hotel had big problems, but if we'd known you were having an issue at our place we could have solved it fairly easily. Our long, low building has additional routers halfway down each wing, which use the same password but are identified differently. Once you know which one to connect to, the signal is great. We generally just mention this to people who tell us that they can't get online, to avoid overlong in-room-blurb - but in the future we will sacrifice pithiness for extra clarity, and put it on the in-room notice.

Glad you had a good stay, and look forward to seeing you again next year!

I was out in the Berkshires for work at Tanglewood and stayed at The Briarcliff Motel. I got in late after the job, and thought it would just be a place to sleep and leave early in the morning for the next day of work. I was pleasantly surprised. It is basic and clean but with little bits of Richard and Clare's great style and taste woven throughout the whole experience: from unique postcards and newspaper clippings on the walls to the delicious breakfast waiting for you in the morning.

Richard and Clare have plenty of suggestions for local activities and restaurants. This would be a great and affordable place for a little retreat with a friend or alone.

I came down to ski with my girlfriiend and another couple...and was VERY pleased with our stay. Renovated rooms with comfortable beds, reasonably priced, helpful staff, and simple but delicious breakfast featuring home made scones...this lovely couple has the RIGHT attitude and approach..all the tired, rip off motels and hotels in America should take note since this is the way hotels should be...home-made, fresh food + clean, renovated, and nice decorated rooms + helpful, genuine service = SUCCESS. These guys are awesome and run a tight ship! Spot on.

merci!

Really great little motel, inexpensive, comfortably and trendily furnished, lovely breakfasts (and drinks and fruit available through the day) and incredibly welcoming young British owners, Richard and Clare, who are full of helpful advice on where to go and where to eat. A few cracked tiles in the bathroom, but otherwise a really lovely room. About 10 minutes' drive to the skiing at Butternut.

We made reservations (which you have to prepay) for a two nights stay in February, as had tickets to a show in Norfolk. But, due to a massive snow storm that closed down all highways in both MA & CT (it was illegal to drive on all the roads after 3:00 PM in both states) the concert was cancelled and we could not drive to the motel. We cancel our reservations. The owners of the motel refused to give us a credit for the first night, because the fine print in confirmation it states that.
I would NOT recommend making reservations if there is a chance that you can’t use them. Learn from our mistake.

If you're reading this wondering how we suddenly got one star instead of the four or five all the people who have actually visited us at the Briarcliff give us, well, you are not alone.

Firstly, some news that may shock you: it snows sometimes, in the winter, in New England. As fairly new business owners and US residents, we're still coming to terms with this, especially in how we deal with cancellations. But here's our basic policy: we try to be human beings. So for the 'weather event' in question, we gave late cancellations the day before, with no charge, to an emergency responder from a town on the coast, and to two other guests whose events got cancelled.

This particular guest is being economical with the truth. He actually contacted us several days before the storm was due, and we explained that current forecasts showed that we would only get 3-5in of snow (pretty spot-on, as it turned out). He cancelled on Thursday morning; the no-drive edict in CT was apparently not issued until the actual storm hit on the weekend. We understand from the venue he was due to attend that the concert wasn't cancelled until some time after Thursday evening. His assertion that he had to prepay is simply untrue - we never charge anyone until they arrive, but we take a credit card in case of a no-show. A simple check of his bank statement would show that. And far from burying this policy in the 'fine print' we state it quite clearly on our one-page booking form as well as our T&Cs.

We have had a terrifically positive experience so far in our brief career as hoteliers, and we are very pro-Tripadvisor – especially since we won in two categories in their Traveller's Choice awards this year. So it's sad that some people choose to bend the truth and vilify us on a public forum just because something they agreed to, just doesn't suit them any more.

During our recent family visit to the Berkshires, we stayed at the Briarcliff -- lovely stay, lovely hosts! Richard and Clare were most kind and helpful. Their transformed 60's motel had a certain wistfulness combined with a modern, chic sensibility. The rooms were both comfy and spare -- loved the furnishings and decor. The lobby was especially welcoming and eclectic, and the complimentary breakfast was delicious -- homemade scones, muffins and granola. We will definitely be back to stay at the Briarcliff and can't thank Richard and Clare enough for their amazing hospitality.

It was our first stay at the Briarcliff Motel and I can't stop talking about it! Richard and Clare are wonderful and made us feel so comfortable from the minute we arrived to the day we checked out. The rooms were very clean, with very comfortable beds with a unique style. The complimentary breakfast was delicious with homemade scones, muffins and granola. The location is perfect for skiing at Butternut or exploring the Berkshires. We highly recommend this boutique style B&B motel and can't wait to return!
