We had a reservation for 6 people. We all agreed that there were too many good dining options in Great Barrington for us to want to return. When we arrived we stood at the hostess station for 5-10 minutes before anyone came by. The bartender looked at us but did not tell us someone would be with us soon or in any way recognize that we were there. At the front door we could smell smoke. When we were seated the smoke was so thick that our eyes were watering. When we inquired they told us that they had a wood stove that was not venting properly. They opened a back door to provide ventilation and moved us to a table where the smoke was not so bad. We waited another 5-10 minutes before orders for drinks were taken. About 30-40 minutes after arriving, we had our drinks and had ordered dinner. The menu on the Web site was from October 2013; several items had changed. The food was actually fine. People at our table had the fish tacos, the salmon, and a steak. I ordered a second glass of wine to go with my entree. At least 15 minutes later it had not arrived and so I inquired at the bar (our waitress was nowhere to be found). The bartender had the order; he just had not filled it. I took my wine back to my table. The mystery to use is that there was hardly anyone in the restaurant and there seemed to be ample staff. There just was not timely or caring service. The music was too loud and jarring for the type of fine dining that the Allium purports to be.
