“Interesting menu- fantastic food experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

We chose Allium for an evening meal on a stopover in Great Barrington after overhearing one of the cafe staff in Massachusetts Museum of Modren Art sing its praises, and we were not disappointed. The menu was varied and interesting without being overwhelming and had a good mix of lighter salads and plates as well as more substantial dishes. We had the truffle and pecorino popcorn as a starting snack which was delicious (and generously portioned). For main my husband had the burger which was intensely flavoured (and came with addictive bacon jam) and I had the hanger steak which was perfectly cooked and a well proportioned plate with interesting sides and delicious sauce. For dessert I had a semi-religious experience with the salted caramel ice cream. The service was quick and excellent - happy to explain the menus without making you feel stupid for not recognising ingredients, and the menu reflects their support of local farmers & food producers. The bar was well stocked & had a good range of whiskeys & some interesting cocktail choices. I only wish I was local so I could go back to try some of the other interesting menu options.

“Wish we had chosen another”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

Three couples met for a family weekend. We had one night to eat together in Great Barrington. We all read the reviews and agreed on this selection. We came from NH, NY and Texas. The service was slow. Two of us ordered a spicy pasta dish. We asked how spicy it was and was told not too spicy. It was unedible. No one at the table could have eaten it. We were offered another selection but that would have taken too long. They offered us a plate of almonds to cleanse our palate. After sharing about half of them they were removed with the rest of the plates. The wine we chose was also not available and all were very pricey.

The menu is unusual. We are typically okay with that but this was a major disappointment.

“total wonderful experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2013

This is a wonderful Bistro in Great Barrington MA. It is divided into 2 areas, bar with dining tables and large dining room with open kitchen. Our waitress, Natalie ,was knowledgable and delightful. I took her advice to try the sparkling wine with orange liquor and loved it. We shared the pâté, cheese board with whimsical small mason jar with pickled beets and carrots. Also took a chance with Artic char with Harissa yogurt and carmilized carrots. Yum! Hanger steak with olive oil potatoes a hit. Finished with peach crisp with peach ice cream. Dinner was leisurely served. A hit all around. Also reasonable priced for quality.

“Enjoyable dining!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2013

We have been to Allium a few times in the past months and have thoroughly enjoyed every meal! We personally love the menu...it is very eclectic and great fun if you are in the mood to be a little bit experimental. When we first went there, my husband ( a basic guy food wise) looked at the menu and said get whatever you want because we won't be coming back! Well his tune changed once we got the food...it was terrific! We enjoy taking out of town visitors to Allium...it really represents the Berkshires very well both in the freshness of the ingredients and the interesting combinations. The service has always been fine during our visits and the ambience is energetic and lively.

“I would rather order a pizza”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013 via mobile

I looked forward to eating here. I've read the recent reviews. It's nice that people like this restaurant but I would get better food at home. Two of us had mussels which were O.K. In a lemon sauce that didn't help. One of us had a Swiss chard and white bean dish that he said was all right.
For main courses the menu had about five choices. None of them was particularly appetizing. Does leg of chicken grab you?
I didn't order the hangar steak but tasted it. VERY chewy. The other three of us had the hamburgers with French fries.
They were fine but having to settle for this kind of meal was not why we went out.
The chef, from what we ate, isnt a particularly good cook.
What the menu lacked in cuisine it made up in prices. Our total bill for four people was $150. For a good meal this would be quite acceptable but for what we had no.
