“For the very best seafood in Gloucester”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2014

Gloucester, MA is known for its seafood. And the Causeway Restaurant is the best there is. It's where the locals go and believe me, they know a good thing when they see it. It has a humble atmosphere with basic tables and chairs....nothing fancy. There isn't much of a view, but you're not there for that. You're there for the freshest seafood available with generously sized portions at reasonable prices. But be prepared for a wait! I've only been there in the off season (mid winter) and I still had an hour and a half wait on a weeknight! I can't imagine what the wait time might be in the summer when the tourists hit town! The trick I learned was to split an entree with your dinner companion simply because they serve more food than one person can consume in one meal. Especially if you've begun with their clam or fish chowder or one of their excellent appetizers. Don't leave without trying their Chowda!

“People line up outside to get in”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2014

Huge portions, low prices, decent food, total lack of pretension make this a big destination for Gloucester day-trippers (mostly coming from the immediate area or near Boston). You can get better, more chef-inspired food elsewhere in America's Oldest Seaport, and often for not much more money--but the Causeway has an "it" factor that keeps 'em coming back. Seating is limited, though, so expect a wait out in the parking lot on a summer weekend, or even during the week.

“Locals Favorite”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2014

You know you can't go wrong if you select a place that all the locals flock to. The only complaint might be that you are served more than you can eat, though the food is so good, that people try to clean there plate anyway.

The ambiance has a local flavor, too, with murals by Jeff Weaver, one of Cape Ann's best living painters and Sicilian Italian spoken more frequently than English.

You can't get seafood much fresher than this either, as the same families that caught the fish are serving you dinner.

Buon Appetito!

“Yuck”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2014

This restaurant is not a good representation of the wonderful food that Gloucester serves.
Sure, they give you large portions for cheap money - but there's a reason for it.
