“So good we ate here twice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

If you pull up and take a quick look at the outside, you might think you're in the wrong place. I've seen junk stores that look more appealing from the outside, but take a moment to let your nose tell you you've arrived. Inside isn't really all that much more attractive - quite austere, but clean and homey. Service is very "dinerish", but efficient and quite friendly. But the main attraction here is the food. Seafood anything, pasta anything, anything the way you want it. And way more than any one, or two people for that matter, can eat. We had a shrimp and marinara pasta dish that would have made our knees buckely had we not been sitting down. Salads were fresh and plentiful, but bread was fresh and hot. The second visit found us having fish chowder and fried haddock sandwiches. It's a wonder the waitresses don't have back issues carrying the massive plates of food to the tables. Everything prepared just right. The locals eat here and might not actually realize just how lucky they are to have such a source of well prepared seafood and pasta in their backyards. But as visitors from orchard country, what a treat. If you have one opportunity to have a meal out while in Gloucester this is the one to not miss.

“Order some fried clams to go and snack in the parking lot while you wait for a table”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

My fiancé and I love the Causeway! This is our favorite place to grab a bite after a day at the beach. We tend to linger on the beach until 5 on a Saturday and arrive to the Causeway by 6 and the line is long. Sometimes we grab something to drink in the attached liquor store (do not drink in the parking lot) and order some fried clams to go to eat out front while we wait. We always order seafood. They have a phenomenal deal on twin lobsters. The muscles, clams, scallops, etc are delicious cooked a variety of ways and seasoned with different sauces. This place does not have an amazing view or a plush dining room but the service is great and everything tastes fresh and delicious. It's the type of place where we don't mind rolling in with beach hair, covered in sand and sticky with sunscreen.

“Great for Some, But, Not for Everybody”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

I had the best fish and chips of my life at the Causeway. Lightly battered and fried haddock that was perfectly cooked, flaky and moist, plenty of very good cole slaw and fries. Others in our party enjoyed baked haddock, pasta marinara with shrimp and scallops and steamed mussels. Caesar salads were prepared just right with the proper proportions of Romain lettuce, dressing and Parmesan cheese. As others have noted, you MUST be prepared to share your dinner entrees since the portions served are so large as to be ridiculous. Prices are on the modest side.

But, be prepared to be surrounded by enormous people who, apparently, are drawn by the amounts of food served. While this may not bother some, we found it a little off putting to look around and see such obese folks. More importantly, the place is off the charm scale, ie., no charm. Bare tables, not the cleanest, hustling wait staff, although friendly, rushing around delivering the aforesaid mounds of food, and the overall chaos caused when crowds of potential customers are milling around waiting their turn makes for a somewhat uncomfortable experience.

We stayed in Gloucester for six nights and ate at the Causeway three times. Enough said.

“Everything about this place is authentic to Gloucester”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2013

The portions are incredible. The fish chowder is a meal in its self. The only problem with ordering the chowder is that it will fill you up. The lobster pie is awesome. Service and ambiance is pure Gloucester. Everything I have had here is always perfect. It helps if you can go during off times.

“Catering Home Run”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2013

Each year our family has a big beach party in a rental home and for 2 years in a row we have had Causeway deliver and set up full trays of food. It's effortless and the value is incredible for all the food you get. GOOOD FOOD! The steak tips were to die for. Everyone was raving about them. Kind of struck out with the usually delicious Cesare Salad. Ask for the dressing on the side. Our salad was floating in a sea of dressing and kind of unappetizing. The rolls are excellent and the leftovers are amazing the next day! Customer service is virtually non-existent but it doesn't seem to matter. They always get the order right - They prefer not to take your catering order until a couple of days before your event. Most times you have to shout it over the phone. So you have to trust that they will come through. But they always have. Right on time with excellent food at an amazing price.
