We went out Saturday Sept 21st after Capt. Bill whale watch cancelled on us. We went on the afternoon trip. The ride out was peaceful and relaxing and very informative. It took about 2 hrs to get to our destination. They brought us right to the whales and we were able to quickly see 2 fin whales, then we traveled on and found 2 humpback whales - a Mom and Baby! They played around our boat for about a half hour. There were other whale watching boats arriving so to be 'neighborly' we left and let them have a turn. We got great pictures and great video. The guy talking ( I didnt get his name but he had dreadlocks) was SO informative and was just great. He even knew each whale by name and knew when they were going to come up, go down, how far they were going to travel, etc. I learned so much. My recommendations are to bring a lunch! It was a long ride out and we got hungry. There is a snack bar but it was a little pricey for what you got and limited. You can bring anything except alcohol or glass. Also bring a sweatshirt and light rain jacket for the ride back. Even if its hot on the ride there, the ride home they go faster and we got sprayed with water and thought we were going to freeze to death. They also pick one person from each trip to win a free whale watch for another time and someone in our group won! I thought that was a fun incentive. This may be a little long (almost 5 hours) to keep little kids occupied (under 5 y.o.) but older kids (6+) may enjoy it. So pack lunch and bring warm clothes! Oh and SNEAKERS! It is really hard to get your balance while the boats moving.
