“Good Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

I stayed in this hotel as part of a Hotwire purchase. I found the room I stayed in clean and quite large. The room had a mini-fridge, a microwave, and a DVD player. The pool was a decent size and clean. I also saw a coin operated washer and dryer. For a family that wants to do a little snacking and entertaining kids, this hotel would be a good choice. For adults, there are computers available near the front desk with a printer hookup and wi-fi access in the rooms. Front desk was efficient, no complaints here.

On the downside, the location of the hotel did not seem to be very good. Its a little walk to the town center and the view was either of the parking lot or the main street in front. Do not expect 5 Star luxury. But, for the price I paid, I think I got good value and a pleasant experience.

Room Tip: Second floor away and not facing Main Street would be your best bet for a quiet room.

This was our first time staying at this Inn but we have been to the Falmouth area many times. While our room was adequate, it was fairly basic overall. We did have some trouble regulating the heat in our room. There was a thermostat on the wall but also a control on the A/C-Heat unit as well. Not sure just which one really does control the heat. The drapes block the heat unless they are pulled up over the discharge from the heater. When we woke in the morning we found some black soot like substance on the drape. I reported this to the front desk upon check-out so hopefully it was addressed. We had breakfast in the attached Percy's restaurant and it was just OK. I found the prices to be high for the quality offered. I think it is a stretch to describe this place as Cape Cod’s Premier Luxury Hotel. The bedding seemed to be fairly new but the bureaus were old and in need of replacement. The ceiling in the bathroom had a large area that showed water damage from the room above. In stead of actually repairing it, it was just covered with a coat of paint. I doubt we would stay here again in the future.

Good sized room. Comfortable clean beds. Bathroom is modern and also clean. The key is the location. A short walk to downtown Falmouth. The indoor pool is a great place for the kids to spend some time. Very good value for the money.

The devil is in the details, but for a place that calls itself “Inn on the Square” when it’s not actually on the square, details don’t seem to matter. The pictures on the website for the Inn do more justice than it actually deserves. That’s to be expected – everyone puts their best face forward on their website, but if you’re going to draw me in and build yourself up, you better be able to at least deliver the promised experience. This is where the Inn falls short.

I booked one of the more expensive King Guestrooms, with a Jacuzzi. It sounded good for a cold Fall weekend, and looked spacious and expansive in the flatteringly-lit photo. After waiting fifteen minutes to check in (there was a computer glitch that slowed the check-in of the two people in front of me), I found my way to my room. It was slightly disappointing.

First, the Jacuzzi is right in the bedroom. I was expecting it to be part of the bathroom set-up, or at least be separated from the main room in some way. Instead it sat just four feet from the bed. Above it, an emergency switch was set to the ‘On’ position – I didn’t dare turn it off for fear of what might happen.

Second, there were no doors to the closet area, admittedly a minor issue, but a pet-peeve of mine. When space is limited, an open-closet plan adds to the cluttered look of the room (especially with a big blue ironing board standing sentinel).

Third, based on the photo of the King Guestroom, I was expecting a desk and chair. Being an old-fashioned guy, I like to write letters while traveling (or at least jot down notes on disappointing hotel experiences) and I enjoy when a desk and chair is available. In this room, there was no desk, and only a small sitting chair.

Finally, a hotel room’s merit is largely found in the details – the little things that a fading upkeep eventually reveals – in this case the broken curtain rod, the gap in molding right in front of the Jacuzzi, the wrinkled bedspread, the messy spackling around the ceiling sprinkler – these are things that guests notice, and while minor on an individual basis, taken collectively they add up to a shabby stay.

This hotel could do with a lesson on expectation management. Its website claims it is "Cape Cod's Premier Luxury Hotel". It really isn't. It's absolutely fine, but it isn't a luxury hotel - it's more like a good 3 star. The bedroom was comfortable and a decent size - ditto the bathroom. The aircon unit was a bit noisy, but otherwise no complaints about the room.

The private courtyard is a small area containing a bench, a table and an ashtray. Not anywhere comfortable that you'd want to relax with a book, as they suggest on the website. The sundeck is a bit of spare land behind the building that houses the swimming pool. There's nothing particularly sunny about it, as it's tiny and in the shade most of the time. No decking either. Just 4 sunloungers and a view of the back of a couple of buildings.

This is the sort of place you use for a couple of night's stopover in Falmouth, when you just need somewhere to sleep. It's fine for that - I'd recommend it even. But it's not the luxury destination hotel the website sells it as.

This hotel is nicely located but a bit musty. The cafe is proximate to downtown Falmouth and some great cafes and restaurants. We stayed with a large party, and most were annoyed in one or another way by the end of the stay. Our room smelled of stale cigarettes and some kind of industrial perfume, but the basics were there. The facilities were dated but acceptably clean. The bathroom ceiling began leaking water, and the response from the staff was downright bizarre. For several hours, they insisted everything was fixed, notwithstanding flowing water. They seemed to have no maintenance staff, and complaints of water flowing from ceiling drywall were met with a response that would have been appropriate if we had complained it was raining outside rather than in. I don't think I'd stay here again, but it won't kill you.

This hotel should be re-named the Inn (Nearly) on the Square because it isn't actually on the Square, there being a row of shops in between. But, even then, the Square isn't much to write home about - just a triangle of grass. Hundreds of villages in Britain have one just as good, if not better. The Inn on the Square is OK but, in truth, just a glorified motel. On arrival, it looked a little dowdy although, in fairness, we checked in on a wet October afternoon. Our room, however, was fine. It came with a state-of-the-art entertainment system which left me bewildered. I'm just an On-Off button guy. A member of staff came to our help but we couldn't remember the instructions after she left us to it! It was hit and miss (mainly miss) after that. The hotel has free room safes and free internet access in the lobby, although guests have to stand up. No, really! Now for the good bit: the Inn on the Square is close to Main Street, Falmouth, which is lovely. We had 2 memorable dinners in different restaurants. The hotel is also near to the pick-up point for the ferries to the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. The return ferry trip - 45 minutes each way - cost only $16 each for foot passengers. What a bargain! We saw Martha's Vineyard at its worst - lashed by rain and covered in sea mist. But it clearly is a lovely spot, with miles of sandy beaches and cute little towns although, I'm told it's crammed in the summer. Still, we'd like to give it another go when we could actually see it!
