My husband and I recently went on a last-minute getaway and booked the Inn on the Sound based on TripAdvisor ratings and comments. We were not disappointed! This is by far the best B&B we have ever stayed in. The Inn is absolutely immaculate and beautifully decorated, with attention to the smallest detail. The room we had booked ended up not being available for all three nights during our stay (apparently a phone reservation was being made at the same time we booked on the internet) so we ended up staying in a different room the first night, then chose another room for the second night, just to see what it was like (it was a Thursday and we pretty much had our choice of rooms as we were the only guests that night). Fiddlers Cove has a king sized bed, and it had a foam cover which made for a great night's sleep. The Green Harbor room was large and comfortable, but our favorite was the Great Harbor, which had spectacular views. All the rooms were so nice, though, that we would stay in any of them again.
The Inn's owners were away during our stay, but Elizeth, the manager, provided great hospitality. The breakfasts were delicious, and we loved the fact that we could eat when we liked, rather than having one big sit down with all the guests at one time like most B&B's. It made for a very relaxed feel, we could be on our own schedule and not have to deal with a mob of other guests all at once.
The weather didn't cooperate well during our stay- it was chilly, extremely windy, and rainy off and on- so we spent most of our time just hanging out. The atmosphere was inviting and comfortable, so we felt fine spending time in the common areas rather than just holed up in our room (though we spend time there too). The resident cat, Bob, charmed my husband, who is not a big "cat person," by curling up in his lap and going to sleep.
With big breakfasts and late lunches, we generally weren't hungry for dinner, but the Inn has a large collection of menus from area restaurants to help you find a place to eat. The British Beer Company is a block away and has a large and varied menu with excellent food. The Inn has a full sized guest refrigerator to store leftovers, and the fridge also has yogurts and beverages for the guests. There is a microwave for guest use and a jar of biscotti in case you need a late night nosh.
All in all the feeling is charming, hospitable and warm- truly a "home away from home." It was a bit pricey but worth every penny, especially if you are going to spend some time there and truly take advantage of the atmosphere. I'd definitely choose this place for a fall/winter getaway rather than summer, since the rates are higher then and you wouldn't be able to enjoy the Inn as much because you'd be out and about all day. Though I'd still be tempted to stay inside, that's how much I loved this place! And then I'd be able to leave the windows open at night and hear the waves crashing...
We can't wait to go back!
