My family and I spent an early June weekend visiting Falmouth and Martha's Vineyard and stayed at the Tides Motel. We were all thoroughly charmed by the place and are definitely considering a return visit. The location is perfect if you want to be close to the water. It's at the head of the Falmouth Harbor and is right next to the Falmouth Yacht Club. We had a first floor room and the back door opened up onto the beach and Vineyard Sound.
The room was very clean and more than adequate. Two double beds accommodated my wife and I and our two children 11 and 9. They weren't the most comfortable beds but I didn't wake up with a backache either. The motel offered to put a cot in the room as well but it wasn't necessary. It also had a mini fridge, a microwave and a coffee maker, along with a sink and some dishes and silverware. We never really took advantage of the appliances but if we had stayed longer, I'm sure we would have been heating up leftover friend clams or chicken tenders. it was convenient to have the fridge for drinks.
The bathroom was a little small with a stall shower. Hand soap was provided but no other toiletries. A hair dryer was available for the asking at the front desk (although it made more noise than heat, but my wife's hair eventually dried). Towels were a bit skimpy but overall the bathroom was more than adequate for our needs.
Having the beach right out the backdoor was great and the kids could have spent hours looking for shells and seaglass, skipping stones and generally exploring the shoreline. Understand that they don't seem to groom the beach at all so it is naturally covered with lots of rocks and shells. This is emphasized by the fact that the yacht club beach is directly adjacent and there is a clear delineation between the two. The yacht club beach is obviously groomed and the motel beach is "au natural".
Waterfront views aside, the location was good but not as close to town, shops or restaurants as I had thought. I read previous reviews stating it was within walking distance of everything. Perhaps, but the walks would be rather long and with two relatively young children and somewhat limited time, we used the car to get around. We chose this location partially because it was close to the Island Queen ferry to Martha's Vineyard, but even that was a half mile away and with a tight schedule and a few bags to carry we opted to drive and park. The town of Falmouth and most restaurants were even farther away.
The only other thing to note is there is no air conditioning in the motel. It was not an issue for us at all even though one day the temperature climbed north of 80. I suspect that on a really hot day, with high humidity and no breeze, it could get pretty hot during the day, but even in the height of summer, that's pretty rare for The Cape.
The Tides Motel is a charming, clean and family friendly place. It's no frills but it's cute and clean and the location right on Vineyard Sound is hard to beat, especially for the price.
