“Hidden Diamond in the Rough”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2014

My family and I spent an early June weekend visiting Falmouth and Martha's Vineyard and stayed at the Tides Motel. We were all thoroughly charmed by the place and are definitely considering a return visit. The location is perfect if you want to be close to the water. It's at the head of the Falmouth Harbor and is right next to the Falmouth Yacht Club. We had a first floor room and the back door opened up onto the beach and Vineyard Sound.

The room was very clean and more than adequate. Two double beds accommodated my wife and I and our two children 11 and 9. They weren't the most comfortable beds but I didn't wake up with a backache either. The motel offered to put a cot in the room as well but it wasn't necessary. It also had a mini fridge, a microwave and a coffee maker, along with a sink and some dishes and silverware. We never really took advantage of the appliances but if we had stayed longer, I'm sure we would have been heating up leftover friend clams or chicken tenders. it was convenient to have the fridge for drinks.

The bathroom was a little small with a stall shower. Hand soap was provided but no other toiletries. A hair dryer was available for the asking at the front desk (although it made more noise than heat, but my wife's hair eventually dried). Towels were a bit skimpy but overall the bathroom was more than adequate for our needs.

Having the beach right out the backdoor was great and the kids could have spent hours looking for shells and seaglass, skipping stones and generally exploring the shoreline. Understand that they don't seem to groom the beach at all so it is naturally covered with lots of rocks and shells. This is emphasized by the fact that the yacht club beach is directly adjacent and there is a clear delineation between the two. The yacht club beach is obviously groomed and the motel beach is "au natural".

Waterfront views aside, the location was good but not as close to town, shops or restaurants as I had thought. I read previous reviews stating it was within walking distance of everything. Perhaps, but the walks would be rather long and with two relatively young children and somewhat limited time, we used the car to get around. We chose this location partially because it was close to the Island Queen ferry to Martha's Vineyard, but even that was a half mile away and with a tight schedule and a few bags to carry we opted to drive and park. The town of Falmouth and most restaurants were even farther away.

The only other thing to note is there is no air conditioning in the motel. It was not an issue for us at all even though one day the temperature climbed north of 80. I suspect that on a really hot day, with high humidity and no breeze, it could get pretty hot during the day, but even in the height of summer, that's pretty rare for The Cape.

The Tides Motel is a charming, clean and family friendly place. It's no frills but it's cute and clean and the location right on Vineyard Sound is hard to beat, especially for the price.

Room Tip: First floor rooms are right on the sound with the beach outside your door. Second floor rooms have...

My Mom and I stayed at the Tides Motel in May (2014) just before the tourist season officially started. The rooms were recently renovated and done very nicely - very clean. We had a 2-burner stove, sink and small refrigerator and had breakfast in the room each day. The grounds are well kept and the staff was courteous. At the time we were there, the beach was not sandy at all due to last years heavy storms. However, the owner has petitioned to the City of Falmouth to have sand brought in to cover the beach. All in all, we had a nice stay and enjoyed sitting in the lounge chairs looking out at the ocean!

My hubby and I have been vacationing in Falmouth since we met 20 years ago. We've stayed at some fancy, schmancy B&B's, some not so fancy hotels and motels, but we *ALWAYS* come back to the fabulous Tides. I don't think there is a spot in Falmouth with better views than this motel, nor is there a spic n' span cleaner spot for the $$. Yes, you might be awakened by a jubilent wedding party that is staying at The Tides with you, but you may be able to catch that very ceremony that's taking place on the beach right next to the motel earlier in the day! When 3 am happens and all you can hear is the sea waves lapping the shore, it's pure bliss. We love you Tides. Thank you for being there for us.

Room Tip: Pssst. Request a beachside room. The rooms are a bit newer and they have added some fabulous ceili...

The best bang for your buck on the Cape. Clean comfortable rooms (some with kitchenettes). Directly on the beach. Get up in the morning, grab a coffee and watch the "Island Queen go by on the way to Martha's Vineyard. Walk around the harbor and see multimillion dollar yachts as they pull up to the dock. Or just sit on the beach with a cold drink in your hand and let the sound of the ocean waves calm and sooth you.
If your looking for high end and fancy this is not for you. But if your looking for a clean friendly place at a great price and fantastic location then I gauruantee The Tides will not disappoint you.

This is a typical motel, it was clean, small kitchen included, shower only, no tub, (2) full size beds not so comfy and would have rated average - but best view ever, right from your balcony jumped up to very good.

Room Tip: We had room # 16, 2 full size beds and kitchen, shower only, no tub.

You feel like your at the end of the world! We have stayed at The Tides many times in the past years and time & life has not allowed us a return visit till this past Aug 8 years later! The Tides has remained consistent and the staff is really friendly & knowledgeable and attentive. The rooms are very clean,The sliders and windows to the ocean sites & sounds are breathtaking! Not to mention awesome sunsets taken in from our 2nd floor balcony.
I can assure you my Wife & I are booking again for next summer!

If you are looking for a high end resort, this may not be the place for you but if you are looking for a comfortable, clean and utilatarian hotel, The Tides Hotel is the answer. Our room was super clean and sat directly on the beach...the waves and foghorn lulled us to sleep every night. Room had a coffee maker and refrigerator. We attended a wedding at St. Thomas' Church followed by a reception at the Falmouth Yacht Club which were within walking distance to the Tides. The only thing that I did not like was there were no privacy partitions on the deck, so people could walk by your room therefore you could not keep the sliding glass door open at night and needed to pull the curtain for privacy if you were getting dressed or napping. Most likely, the lack of partitions is due to fire codes.
