“Locals place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013 via mobile

Love this place! Somewhere between eat in the ruff and very casual. It is a great place to go this time of year, because during the summer the food comes out slow and it gets busy. Have been here many times, when company comes from out of town it is a must. I think this place is why friends visit. It is a fried seafood and chowda place plain and simple done the way it should. Go where the locals go.

“The best fried fish and clams in Gloucester.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2012

There is seating inside and outside, but neither is luxurious. However, if you come here it is for the excellent fried fish and delectable fried clams. My personal favorite is fried calamari. I have tried Woodman's, Farnham's, The Clam Box and several other places in the area, but Essex Seafood is the local's favorite and mine too.

If I have a problem with this place at all, it is that there is no separation between the car park and the outside seating... It can get pretty fumy and dusty in summer.

“Amazing Clam Chowder!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

Our visiting relatives from Norway really wanted to taste the best clam chowder in the area so after our first try at good clam chowder failed, we took them to my favorite place for chowder- Essex Seafood. I'm happy to say that they were not disappointed. The price is great, the chowder is always delicious, and it's nice to sit and relax in the restaurant. We also bought a haddock plate and a fried clam plate to share. Lots of food (especially fries) for a really good price. More than enough for a group of four to share and feel full. They even have asked us to take them back for a goodbye meal before they return to Norway- the place was a hit!

“Fresh seafood, fair prices”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2012

We had a combination platter with fried shrimp and haddock and ordered a side of clam chowder. The platter included fries and onion rings. Next time I would just get the onion rings as they were hand battered and yummy. The platter and the chowder were both very good and reasonably priced. We sat in a booth near the ordering area. It is a popular place and I see why. If you love clams and lobster, i think this would be a really great place to get them as there were numerous choices.

“Casual dining with good seafood”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

The restaurant is very casual with inside and outside dining. In August it seemed cooler to eat outside so we chose a picnic table out back. There was quite a line at the window inside where you order. We took that as a good sign as this was somewhere good to eat. My husband and I split the special they had that included 2 lobsters, steamers, and corn. It was plenty of food for us and so good. We then shared a piece of Boston Cream Pie. My goodness it was delicious! The prices seemed reasonable. It was a nice place for some fresh seafood while visiting Cape Ann.
