My friend and I just returned from a wonderful 2 night stay at The Lightkeepers Inn and I am already planning a return visit with my husband and our two sons next year!
Everything about our visit was perfect, due in large part to the fact that our lodging situation was ideal. The Inn is absolutely charming and our room was immaculate. It is perfectly located off of the downtown Edgartown shopping and dining area, which made walking to restaurants and shops extremely easy.
Most importantly, Doreen, the Inn Manager, was a true delight. She met us at the Inn even though we arrived well before check-in time (we took a red-eye flight into Boston and then an early morning puddle jumper directly on to the island) and allowed us to store our luggage in the entry area until the room was ready. The she invited us back to the Inn's main business office just down the road to freshen up and change clothes. Upon our day of departure, she likewise let us store our things while we did some last minute sightseeing and even ran back to the room once we had checked out to retrieve my friend's forgotten cell phone! She truly made our visit memorable with her kindess and genuine interest in our happiness.
A few fun tips while on the Island:
1. Be sure to enjoy a dinner at Alchemy, a delicious restaurant a short walk from the Inn in Edgartown. Their menu claims that their Mojitos are *the best* and they truly are!
2. Rent bikes from Wheel Happy rentals, again just down the road from the Inn - the people who work there are very friendly and will give you directions on how best to bike around the island.
3. Take your bikes over to "Chappy" on the little ferry, which is just down the road from the Inn, and check out the infamous bridge.
4. Take the local shuttle bus from Edgartown to Menemsha and ask the driver to drop you off at John Belushi's gravesite along the way. It is in a lovely little cemetary and his site is very easy to spot right at the entrance.
5. Once in Menemsha, be sure to eat some fresh seafood at Larson's fish market - the fresh lobster was delicious. The Bite clam shack was closed when we were there, but I hear that it is great, too.
6. Mad Martha's Ice Cream shop in Edgartown is also a must!
7. Ride your bikes to Oak Bluffs (weather permitting) to see the Flying Horses Carosel (oldest in the US) and the "Gingerbread Houses" and then ride on to Vineyard Haven to eat at the famous Black Dog Tavern (FYI - they don't serve alcohol, but do have a corking fee if you bring your own).
