“Loved the Lightkeepers Inn”

The Lightkeepers Inn

Jul 22, 2008

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at the Lightkeepers Inn, Edgartown, MV. We have been visiting MV for a combined 30 plus years. Our stay has been in homes we have either owned or rented. On occasion we have stayed in a guest house or hotel only to find that the accommodations were nice but very small. The Lightkeepers Inn is perfect! It is spacious with a separate kitchen/living room area, good size bedroom and bathroom. It is charming and very nicely appointed which lends a warm and cozy home feeling. The Lightkeepers Inn had everything you would want or need. Complete with flatware, dishes, glasses( including wine and champagne glasses) pot, pans, toaster etc. I am extremely particular and have stayed at many of the finest hotels and resorts. This met all of our needs. I read some reviews prior to my visit that suggested that it may be noisy at times with the over-flow road to the Chappy ferry. I did not hear a sound, in fact I was amazed at how quiet and relaxing it was. On another note, it was impeccably clean and you could not ask for a better location. A minute's walk to everything. We stayed in suite # 4. When I return, I might like to try suite # 5 because it has its own private patio deck. The staff is wonderful. You have to meet George, Doreen and Kate at the Golden Door. They are such a delight. I am looking forward to getting back there again soon and enjoying yet another relaxing experience.

“Edgartown Find”

The Lightkeepers Inn

Jul 4, 2008

We have stayed at The Lightkeeper’s Inn twice, most recently this past May. Both times we enjoyed their East Chop Light Suite (Suite 5). The pictures on their website are a good representation of the interior. It’s just plain charming. The suite is one of several that are part of an old house in the heart of Edgartown. That did mean we heard our neighbors sometimes, but not so much that we felt it approached being a problem.

We loved the suite because it had everything we needed for our stay. Outside our door was an outdoor deck that allowed us to have breakfast al fresco or prepare dinner on the charcoal grill and serve it up on our outdoor table. We also cooked indoors since the kitchen had all the proper appliances. Fine restaurants were a just a stroll down the lane when we wanted to eat out. In other words the suite gave us options. The owners did the little things that get noticed, like a personal welcome, flowers and chocolates on the kitchen table (we didn’t require them or ask for them but there they were) and high quality toiletry supplies. They also did well the important things we expected like comfortable beds and furnishings. The rooms seemed to have been freshly painted and scrubbed before we arrived. Yes the upper bath had a low ceiling, the floors had a slight bias here and there and the angles of things were unique, but we didn't mind anything (except our heads in certain areas of the bath.)

Edgartown is an old town. Near the water the yards are small and buildings are, to use a peculiar New England expression, thickly settled, which means things are close and tight. And The Lightkeeper’s Inn is right in the mix. Edgartown Harbor and Dock Street are a minute away; five minutes walking are the lower Main Street stores. Still, we had a car that we could park in their private lot below our suite--a plus rare and coveted. We tend to be explorers. We loved having a car so we could drive up-island to seek out our favorite haunts in Menemsha, Chilmark and Aquinnah (formerly Gay Head) and the properties of The Trustees of the Conservation, which are scattered all over the Vineyard. Staying at The Lightkeeper’s Inn opened our eyes to other possibilities. And so we added Chappaquiddick, Cape Pogue and Wasque to that list: located on Simpson’s Lane, the Inn is two short blocks from the Chappaquiddick Ferry.

We are budget travelers and we are well aware nothing is inexpensive in Martha’s Vineyard. That makes not exploding our budget an interesting task. We could make it work by staying during The Lightkeeper’s Inn shoulder season, which fell within our constraints for affordable lodging.

The folks who run the Inn have always been gracious. They have included with their correspondences handwritten notes to thank us for staying with them and with invitations for future stays. They know how to keep things on a personal level.

There is one mystery, though it’s not one created by The Lightkeeper’s Inn. TripAdvisor lists it as a bed and breakfast. But it is not. There’s no breakfast. It’s an Inn. And quite a nice one at that.

We stayed in the cottage and found it very usable - much more so than most kitchen-equipped rooms. It was clean, very well equipped and the management very helpful. The location in Edgartown was great (we visited Chappaquiddick which is right down the road and across the inlet via the ferry). Would definitely stay here again.

“Cozy Comfort”

Our party of three women stayed one night at The Lightkeeper Inn on Martha's Vineyard during a fall vacation. The directions to the Inn from the Vineyard Haven ferry provided by the innkeepers were excellent and led us quickly to the Inn where we were cheerfully greeted by a staff member. We stayed in the Edgartown Light Suite, named for the local lighthouse. Entrance to our suite was off the limited parking area with a secondary entrance from a communal patio area. Our unit included a queen bed room with beautiful cherry, colonial furniture, a living room/kitchen with all appliances, a small table and two chairs, a sofa bed, easy chair, and tv, and a full bath. The suite was very cozy and comfortable for our short stay. Most of the shops and restaurants of Edgartown were within walking distance of the Inn. Maps of the town and the island were included in a guest folder along with many other brochures detailing points of interest on Martha's Vineyarde. The Inn staff were very friendly and helpful. Since we were there during a relatively quiet season, we had little traffic on the very narrow street to bother us or to block our exit. We enjoyed our stay.

Our stay at the Lightkeeper's Inn started out perfectly -- nice little suite, seemingly very private, and a half-bottle of champagne from the owners (whom we never met) to help celebrate our anniversary. But then I had the worst night's sleep of my life. We stayed in the Cape Pogue Suite, on the ground floor towards the back, and just outside the bedroom window was the loudest ice machine imaginable -- so loud it might as well have been in the room, and totally unnecessary, as each room has its own fridge with ice trays. I spent eight hours listening to the machine go on and off (when I reached my limit & turned it off around 1.30, someone turned it back on half an hour later), when not distracted by every sound made by the couple in the room above, or by the very bouncy mattress which meant that every time my husband moved, I woke up. And I'm not a light sleeper. And after a long sleepless night, there was no hint of breakfast, which made for a strange contradiction between motor-lodge experience and boutique hotel prices. We chose the Lightkeeper's inn because of the great reviews on this site, but having seen the other hotels in Edgartown (the Harborview, Edgartown Inn etc.), all of which had better September rates, I'm kicking myself. Maybe the other suites are better, but this was a very dark spot in an otherwise lovely trip to the Vineyard.
